hmm 10 inch or 12 inch miter saw?
So while working on my friends deck, we where cutting a stack of balusters and he got a little over excited, and pushed a baluster into the saw guard while the blade was spinning, and the saw stopped and jammed. After the incident, the saw was no longer behaving well. The kerf is much wider and the stops no longer line up/ and the bevels are off. I think the arbor may have been knocked out of alignment, the scary part is the blade guard is not retracting well, and I have to slam the handle down to get it to retract.
The saw is a 10 inch rigid that is about five years old, (I got it way back before I knew anything about tools… so I think it is time to put it to pasture, and I would like to replace it. I am torn between a 10 inch and 12 inch saw.
I like the light weight and compactness of the ten inch saw, but find myself wishing for a larger cutting capacity about 40% of the time. I also just read the latest FHB and was thinking about the Dewalt or the Bosch. the dewalt is tempting and lighter, but I really dont like to support dewalt since they left the US and kept the prices the same. The bosch looks nice but seems really huge…. Thoughts on saw choices?

I got the Bosch 12 slider this winter..THE best saw ever.

If it's a slider, you can go with a smaller blade without too many regrets.
If it's not a slider, go with the 12".
I bought the Makita LS1212 a couple months ago. It's a 12" dual bevel slider. It was between that or the Bosch. The Makita got great reviews everywhere I looked, came with an excellent 96 tooth carbide blade, miters 60 degrees to the right, and it came with a free 12V impact driver (worth $210). It was also cheaper than the Bosch, even before the impact driver was thrown in. And, I may be wrong, but I seem to recall that the Bosch got a lot of poor reviews for blade wobble... worth looking into. I got mine at Amazon/ToolCrib for $630. If you buy it today, it's $565 and you can take $50 off your order up to June 20th. Back the $210 impact driver out of that if you need one, and you get the saw for $305!!! That's $115 less than I paid a month ago, and it's killing me! Plus it's a great saw, a little big and heavy to lug around compared to the 10", but a great saw. Hope that helps. John
I have a 10 in dewalt and the only thing i would change is to get either the 12in or the slider.
every time this topic comes up, I put in my pitch for my Makita LS1013 10" slider.
Try searching for this topic and see what other opinions are out there.
I have the same Makita 10" slider. It is great. You can cut molding as high as 12" when laying it flat on the table and using the bevel and sliding feature.
I bought a Makita LS1210 slide saw many years back and it is awesome. It's a 10" but with the "Angled" mounted motor it easily crosscuts a 4X4. I also like the tall fence since I do alot of baseboard and crown work. It has all the features, dual arbor adjustments, set table angles, motor brake, etc. It lighter and the blades are more affordable than 12". Also less wobble with the blade.
A friend of mine always bought Dewalt's and Milwaukee's, always 12" saws. Always kidded about my Makita. Won't you know last time I was at his shop I saw a new LS1210. As stubborn as he is, tryed to say he couldn't pass up a good deal, Bull s--t. Another convert.

For years I had the hitachi 8 1/2"slider. Then bought the 10" slider. It tilts both ways. Great saw.
hands down ...
for what you asked about ...
which was a compound miter saw ...
the DeWalt 12 inch.
705 ... maybe?
like they say ... size of a 12 for the weight of a 10.
best bargain in the saw market. Your neighbor can jamb as many pieces of errant lumber into it as he wants ... it'll laugh and keep cutting.

I didn't know if you were looking at sliders or not, I recently bought a 10" non-slider as a back up to my slider so I could have a small portable saw and wouldnt have to lug the big one all the time for small jobs.
I really like the 10" because it's so small and portable, looking back I wish I had bought the 12" non-slider, a little bigger, but I find myself needing a tad more then 10" can give me.
if it was going to be only saw, I'd go with the 12" slider all the way.
"if it was going to be only saw, I'd go with the 12" slider all the way."
Yeah, all the way from crawling on your knees out of your truck, then in throught he $$ mahogany door, then up the flight of stairs.
That's why I have the 12" slider and the 10" fixed head. The little guy does 90% of what I need, and the big guy comes out when it's really needed.
It's nice to have two saws, but if I had to choose one it would be the Dewalt 12" fixed head. Good compromise.
