I have a situation where I need to get an 1-1/2″ pvc drain line through an I-beam. On the side of the beam that I need to put a drain is a concrete slab poured in to the web of the beam, on the other side are floor joists sitting on the flange of the beam were I need to tie into. Will it degrade the beam to put a hole through the web? Thanks for any help. -Ed

It sure could affect the beam, depending on the depth and size of the beam, where the supporting column is, the loads, and on and on. Sounds like the advice of a structural engineer is needed.
