Christmas and New Years Day are both on Monday.
How much time are you going to take off for Christmas and New Years?
If you have employees, what type of standard days (those other than taken / earned vacation time) off will they have for the holidays?
Replies
We usually try to shut down between Xmas and New Years...just depends how many fires pop up<G>...I pay the two guys I've got...somebody's got to buy the beer.
Abe says, "Man, you must be puttin' me on"
God say, "No." Abe say, "What?"
God say, "You can do what you want Abe, but
The next time you see me comin' you better run"
Well Abe says, "Where do you want this killin' done?"
God says, "Out on Highway 61."
Thanks for sharing guys...as for me:
I only have my superintendent as an employee, and my wife helps in the Office, it is only a stroll across the back porch.
My super has family in Carson City, Nevada and is leaving the 25th and back on the 5th. He'll get a Christmas bonus and paid holidays. In some cases it is good to have him gone as he is very energetic and diligent, constantly reminding me of things to do. He is a great kid.
Fortunately, many of the subs will be working and making money for us. Most of my work (except for site visits) is by phone / emails / faxes.
The subs will be slower and less aggressive than usual, so while I may have some administration duties, it should be easy going from December 22 - January 2.
I will probably use the time to catch up on some lots and potential rent houses I am chasing...maybe compose some offers for presentation after the new year.
I also may figure out some things I can do here on the property.....tractor and loader work is fun for me. We may work on a small picnic area on my property we are setting up for our Church members to use with swing / deck / bar-b-que pit under a very nice oak tree.
I am looking forward to the slow down, but I am blessed in that I love what we do. Catching up with the slow down and launching things on the 2nd and 3rd will be exciting after the slow down.
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE.

we get thanksgiving and the friday after. xmas day, and new years day. even if falls on weekend. My brother company take xmas week. if you dont have vacation saved for that week, you dont get paid. their whole company locks the doors xmas week, every year, even if their jobs are behind schedule.
ordinarily i take off pretty much the entire time from thanksgiving untill St.Patricks day.
this year however---a really interesting, fun project came along--16-20 days worth of work i will start tommorrow actually. I will take sat., sun, monday off those weekends---but other than that I will work everyday weather permits untill it's done.
50 degrees and not a cloud in the sky today---------send me 3 weeks more of THAT.
Stephen
if my guys show up on weds after christmas... and work wed thur & fri... I'll pay them for the full week.... if they choose to not work that week... I don't expect to pay em
prob the same thing for new years...
p
We're not working the 25th or the 26th. The 27th, the 28th, and the 29th will be optional but I imagine we'll all be there. We'll take Monday, the 1st off obviously as well. No matter what though.... all hands on deck for Tuesday the 2nd.
I like the way the holiday worked out this year. Even if you just take the normal weekends off and the 25th, and the 1st.... you still get some short weeks and nice long weekends.
I pay my guys for any major holidays that fall on weekdays. I consider the 26th part of that deal so they'll get three paid days off from me. If they choose to take the 27th, the 28th, and the 29th off as well, it's on their dime. Therefore, I highly doubt that I'll have all of Bowl Week off. :(

Back in my ba hum bug days I always worked every suitable day as Hazlett put it. Of course like him I was working for my self but I even took jobs that were special for Christmas.
Now I watch bowl games as much as I can like you. With the family home , nothings better. Im sure looking forward to it .

The week between Christmas and New Years, come back on the 2nd.
Cant remember the last time I worked the week between the 25th and the 1st.
Doug
I'll be off for X-mass and traveling back on Tue. Back to work on Wed. The guys can have what they want off, most people do not want us in their house during that time, though some do. If not there could be some shop work to do. They will get the holidays off paid, possibly an addition day but that is not my decesion.
New years I'll be back on Jan 2. I'll expect my guys back the same. But if someone wanted the second off as well we're pretty laid back...
We get Christmas and New Years paid. We work 4-day weeks, normally with Friday off, but this year my crew will take the 26th off and work on Friday the 29th. Maybe. We'll be lax about people who want extra days off, we just won't pay them. Back to work on Jan. 2nd.
1/2 day on fri the 22nd. Christmas party in the afternoon. Hope I can lug the huge bonus home after all that partying!
Off Monday, back to work Tues. I wanna work. These past couple of years are some of the busiest I've had in allmost thirty years. I'm making hay..........
For New Years I guess off Monday back to work Tues.
What else am I gonna do anyway? Sleep late?

We're off the 24th and 25th. I'm starting a bathroom on the 26th but my guy will be in Georgia until the 28th. Maybe he'll be working on the 29th if not I'm on my own.
Headstrong, I'll take on anyone!

We're on the final push and mnoving in January.
No days off - WORK Dammit!!!
Don K.
U guys are civilized.
Not really. :-)
Its summer here and I dont take a break during the year, so I make the only one I do get a decent one.
Lots just take a couple of weeks.....I reckon by the end of the year there HAS to be some benefit to all that work.

Christmas and New Years Day are both paid holidays so double time if they work them.
Trying to take Christmas eve to New Years... Lots to do before then--might make it.
I definitely owe it to the wife and kids after that year.

I'm flying to TX on Wednesday the 20th and coming back to MI after the new years. This is much too short of a vacation break, but that's how we've got it planned anyways.

Are you flying to / and will you be in Austin?
Austin is about 1 hour and 45 minutes from my home.
Certainly if it was not the holidays I would drive up and welcome you to TX. DW might get pissed if I just take off and do it...being a "family time of year", but if I can think of a good resaon, or if one arises....I may drop in if you are in Austin.
well lets see ,I usally take off around Thanksgiving, and go
back to work around Easter, seems like that is what its been
like the last 4 years around here. OOHH by the way Luther

Tx, I'm in Austin right now. I've spent the last two days solid playing cards and board games with my grandson. He LOVES playing games. So far we've done Trouble, Crazy Eights, Chess, Canasta, I Doubt It, Parchesi, Chinese Checkers, Zabratz, Solitaire, Top Gun and I think I forgot a few. He's got some big plans for me today to play MORE games LOL.
I love every minute of it, so I know what you mean when you say the Holidays are family time!
I'll be getting out here at different times, when the holiday pressures aren't on. If we get a lull next week, I'll post here, but I really doubt that the little guy is going to let up. We haven't even had time to go to the clubhouse and playground yet!!!
He's six.

I've never been paid for a holiday and don't intend to pay help for days not worked. Want a day off - take one. I pay good money for time worked and expect good work for money paid.It is starting to get as bad up here as it was in the south years ago - the week between Christmas and New years it is almnostr impossible to get a full rew and regular deliveries, so might as well take time off and shut the job down.

Well yea. Youre sounding like the grump. <G> The kids are out of school and family actually gets together. Inlaws and everyone , lol.

I really wish everybody would take that week off. Nothing worst than having to come in for a mid morning pour or sitting around all week waiting, when I could be at the hunting camp. If every contruction company, every concrete company closed that week, every year. think how great it be.Oh I know some sap going say, I need to work, to make money. if you knew it was coming 11 months three weeks from now, its your problem.
Another old age discussion that will never be settled.

gonna try this again. Somehow Prospero dumped my first reply into the heart attach thread...I don't care if we work or not. I'd as soon have the week off, but what grumps me out is that more every year, they say they want to work, but then only one guy shows up each day. can't work alone and get anything done, so I end up having to work every day whilke they each get most of the week off.or like a ouple years ago, I worked my butt off on organising schedule and materials orders and delivery so they ould keep working while I was on vacation. Materials got ordered and sat uncovered while nobody did much of anything all week ccause nobody sshowed up...Too frustrating - like I said, better to just plan to take off. Fighting reality is hard work.

Very well said .
There is always those who say they need the work or they have to have it . I understand your position where I think bonuses helped evolve there somehow .
I, like you never got a bonus.
Its true , even if you have one thats working you have your site open for business so that puts you behind the 8 ball of responsebility during that vacation.
The same thing happens here for deer season and what ever season it happens to be which there are so so many . They used to let school out for deer season here when there was only a gun deer season. But now there are different methods of taking a deer such as muzzle loader and the archery season where you can take several different species from September through middle of Febuary. At least that helped the problem believe it or not stretching the seasons out allowed people to hunt with out taking off work or staggering their vacations where you can actually function during gun deer season because the majarioty will choose another type of hunting season.
There has never been an answer for Christmas that suits everyone .
Dad used to say ; When its so cold that they spend their time around a burning barrel dressed in coveralls with gloves on , working is uneffective . Of course this is a Southern state so I wondered what the Northern states felt. LOL.

We can get any time off we want at the company I work for, within reason, as long as our jobs are being completed on schedule. We get Xmas and New Years paid holiday. 25th to 1st is catch as catch can with people traveling, etc.. Since Spring and Summer are so busy building, the last two years I've taken the month of October off to travel in Oregon, Nevada, Idaho, Utah, to ride mountain and road bikes. After so many years of six day work weeks, I feel like I deserve the time off to just enjoy life and this great land we live in!

Well quite being such a Scrooge and take a little time off, you cant take that money with ya you know! :)
BTW, I like the week between off, its the holidays dammit! Plus I never see any work get done durring that time so you(anybody/everybody) just as well stay home.
EDIT; I read your replys to Mooney and BB, but if you have to work come out here to Iowa and help me put a furnace in my house, its the only time I have available to do it.

'snot about money, it's about commitments- to get things done on schedule and to keep men busy year round

Relax a little Piffin, I was just having fun. I hate to work the week between Christmas and New Years, gotta have some time to R&R.
I'm of the mindset that Brownbagg mentioned, you have 11 months and two weeks to plan for this, if you cant do it then you got other problems! The "you" in that paragraph is not you personally.
I'm also of the mindset that we arnt saving lives so if people cant wait an extra week to get their new kitchens or whatever then the hell with them, theres no pleasing them.
I just moved back here to Iowa and I thank God everyday that I was able to get back on with the guy that I worked for before leaving. We had a house that had to be done Dec. 1 in order for the HO's to move in, they had their house sold and closed on Nov. 29th so there was no le-way. I worked 70 - 80 hours a week for the month of Nov and we got the job done, well sort-of, but they did get moved in on time, we just yesterday finished.
I believe in getting things done on time but I also believe that until people start dieing from not having this work done then I'm not going to give up everything I believe in in order for that to happen.
Please dont take this as a rant to you, I was just poking a little fun at your expense. The more I respond on BT the more I realize that nobody is getting my sarcastic BS.
Doug

Blue,
Don't let him near a computer. My son is 8 and is addicted to computer games and his Playstation. He smokes me in just about anything we play.
When I was his age I was outside and in the dirt about 90% of the time.....I have to kick him out of the house often.
Keep me posted on your travels to and from TX.
I usually try to catch up on office work between the holidays 'cuz I'm perpetually behind, but this year I'm trying to finish my house, so I'll be off the 'day job' and doing tile, trim and paint all next week.
Really am looking forward to it. Answering machine says "call me on the 2nd" and I'm gone.
