An article on home fire protection sprinklers and some of the city ordinances that are being passed in California requring them in new construction and even remodeling in some cases. The article won’t help you design your sprinkler system (no technical data) but some statistics on effectiveness.
(helps if I put in the link…)

Especially with the newer CPVC piping systems that can often replace the iron pipe systems I think sprinklers have gone from just a nice, but expensive, option to think about to a doable minimum standard in most new homes. Building my own home I would be hard pressed not to install a sprinkler system. The overall cost per square foot is quite low.
not only cpvc but now also pex makes it very easy to install, unfortunately in california where sprinklers are now required for many high end homes that are constructed on the outskirts of urban areas, they must be installed by someone with a C-16 license. even a general contractor with a "B" or an engineering contractor with an "A" license may NOT install them in their own homes.
so even though it is easy and quick to do the sprinkler fitters are in great demand and their prices........ well lets just say the guys in my area are doing well. and lets not forget the expertise that goes into designing the systems, and the liabilities that go with both designing and installation. the fitters are earning their money.
