i read an article yesterday that said old timers used to use a concoction of 1 part boiled linseed oil to 4 parts mineral spirits to protect exposed wood on their boats….one guy says he uses this formula for exposed fir decking and posts and they look great 8 yrs later….
has anyone used such a formula??

Yep. But now I leave out the mineral spirits and am happy with the result.
What you're describing is a really thin oil. Enough coats and it'll be OK. No mildewcide there if that's of any concern to you.
PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!
Start with a 1:1 blend, and the first coat will soak in well. Make the second coat 1 part spirits to 2 or 3 parts oil...it will soak in well, blend with the first coat, and start to build a finish. Then make the third and fourth coats straight oil.
One part oil to 4 parts spirits would make for a very thin mixture. It will soak in well, but will take forever to build.
