I’ve looked at the archives and have not found this discussion, so forgive me if it’s been covered. I recently purchased a new “old” house and have spent the past 5 months gutting and remodeling. The project’s theme has been to do everything myself (being between jobs was a help). I have covered many new areas in terms of skills and the results has been great. Cathedral ceiling, plumbing, electrical and new walls all have been sucessfully tackled. I have been a cabinet maker, by hobby, for 17 years and am completely comfortable will all facets of wood working. Having said this, I am having an extremely difficult time accepting the fact that to replace all the windows in this home will cost $8000.00 to $12000.00. So the point of my posting. Has anyone ever tried to make their own casement style windows? Appox. 4 feet wide by six feet tall. I’m thinking more of a bi-fold design, though. I have thought of two options. 1: by vinyl patio doors ($120.00 each)and trim most of the frame out (carefully on table saw), then encase remaining frame and sash into my own wooden frame. Or 2:try to buy the preassembled sashes (double pane – low e – argon, etc, etc) and make the frame. Oh yeah – maybe 3: simply buy the glass itself and make wooden frames to accomadate them and don’t worry about the argon – the overall savings could off set the energy ineffiencies. The ability to create a wooden frame of any design is not an issue. I’m interested in unforseen problems that simple can not be overcome. Thanks.
