Being as I find myself being a copper roofer…some brain cells have ignited.
I am using recycled SYP paneling as a finish floor in my halways and living room..it is hand planed T&G about 17″ wide planks..gotta clean off the many layers of wall paper and such, but it is sweet stock.
I found copper rose head nails at Jamestown Dist. for a tad less than 20 bucks a pound ( 2″ cut shank rose heads)…the local ACE hardware is selling steel cut nails for 4 bucks a pound..but they just ain’t right to my eye.
So here is where I take a left turn..being as the nails are (a) exposed prominantly and (2) Decorative as well as structural and (*) pretty…I have embarked on a pattern..I am going to create a board stagger and nail schedule to match the stars over head at the zenith of the astrological celestion that falls between my wifes Bday and my own…Libra and Virgo respectively.
As if the floor was a mirror of the sky, twinkling with these copper stars…
Am i insane? yep. but, only those who are enlightened will know what I have done…
HASBEEN..I need a better star map..you got one? ( i really don’t relish the thought of doing it the hard way).
This will be soooooo cool.
I bet the wife will buy a rug.

Actually, my excentric friend, it sounds like a cool idea... actually a stellar one!
A hidden secret that some years from now may be uncovered by some brainy guy from a future breaktime forum... this IS where all the smartest guys assemble... isn't it?
Maybe you could inlay a copper plate inscribed with the astronomical time of the map... so as to avoid a possible loss of such a troke of brilliant thought and painstaking work. Something inconspicuous would be most tasteful.

Great idea, Sphere. I'd like to see that.
In my wife and mine's first apartment, I used a planetarium science toy from Mart to display the stars on the night of our wedding. I then painted each dot with glow in the dark paint, 1/16" at most in diameter. Then I tapped out the milky way in glow paint (slapping a lightly loaded artist's flat brush against another's handle so that it spatters tiny droplets) as well. I did it with out telling her. That first night in our first apartment was a good night. By the way the effect was very realistic and it looked almost as if you were outside sleeping under the stars. I'd do it again but our bedroom ceiling is antique beadboard.
The copper nail idea is cool but as they age the patina may blur the effect. Perhaps stainless would remain "twinkly" over the years?

I have always said that you have to be an artist to be a successful woodworker/craftsman. You are the epitome of inspiration.
