Is there a reason not to use horizontal 1x strapping to hang drywall on a wall other than extra work and the added thickness? Works for ceilings. Similar to using resilient metal channel. I can see a couple of advantages. If the studs are very out of plane, it’s easier to shim furring flat than the full stud faces. Attaching to horizontal strips lets you hang the drywall sheets vertically even if the studs are irregularly spaced.

I did that on my new house then ran all electrical and services in that space , so you would insulate stud cavity and poly before strapping. I used 2x2. And for poly used certainteed mem- brain. You can also put rigid rock wool in there to if you want, I didn’t as we used R-12 Zip system on the outside.
