DW would like a hot tub on an elevated deck in the pre-construction phase.
What size joists should I use???? ; spec’s follow
- ~ 9-10′ off the ground held up by 4 – 6×6 spaced as follows: post- 4’span – post- 9’span- post -4’span -post
- 12′ span with #2 SYP treated 2×10 16″ o.c. (17′ wide)
- 2×12 ledger bolted to house on 16″ centers – 5/8″ bolts
- 3-2×12 header beam
Thinking of bumping the joists up to:
- 2×10 on 12″ center
- 2×12 on 16″ center
- 2×12 on 12″ center
Any ideas as to the best joist sizing to support for the hot tub?
Thanks,
Roger <><

Design this so the tub is set into the deck, level with the ssurface and header around it.
Build the separate elevation support for the tub with four more 6x6 post right under it. That way spans are not an issue and if the tub fails it won't take the whole deck with it

Piffin,
You always have wise and sage advice. I got a kick out of the crack about the tub falling through and not taking the deck with it.
DW says that she only suggested the hot tub because she was changing the deck design to not have a regular roof over it (the way I want it; she rather prefers an arbor type of roof).

The only problem I've had with flush mounting hot tubs is that "oldies" have trouble getting out - especially if drunk. I tried mounting one half in and half out, but it makes access to the control panel and pump a real pain. Much less chance of damage to the cover when they are flush with the deck too.
There could be safety reasons too for having the top welll above the deck. I suppose I would then frame the deck normally but with a couple of extra posts diretly under the tub and with an extra beam between the two, perp to the joists.Of course if Mrsql is like my wife, she will think of the tub as a piec of furniture that can be moved, so as soon as I had the deck built, she would want to move it.
