I sent one of the Taunton guys an email linking your post. If they see it they might know who to ask.
The picture while nice, doesn't give me any firm idea-but the article mentions local milled lumber-among which there was poplar used. It is possible to get that color on poplar. Perhaps it's as simple as that.

I'm glad you like the detail. I touched base with the architect to get some specifics for you. The balusters are indeed Poplar that have been finished with Zar stain in "Teak Natural" tone.
