How About A Pencil Exchange?

jimblodgett | Posted in General Discussion on September 28, 2003 01:52am

I’ve been to a few Breaktime Fests now.  Wear my t-shirts all the time and the hat Mike Smith gave me (along with everyone else) at TexFest is my favorite hat.

So anyways, today I was thinking it might be fun to exchange carpenter’s pencils with as many people as possible here at Breaktime.  The pencil I’d send you has my local yard name and address on it – that’s what I’d like to get back, a pencil from your favorite yard with the name and address of the yard on it.

Hokey?  What can I say, I sentimental.  So how about it, any other saps out there who’d like to have pencils from all over the world to remember other folks by?  Anyone else game?

I was even thinking it might be more meaningful if it’s a used pencil, or at least sharpened, but I would settle for new if that’s what you folks think.

What do you say?

      Hi Bee,

I have sent pencils to you and two other builders in the USA. Today I received a pencil from Indiana, Thank you Rich Beckmann (whom I could not send an e-mail) "return-path" and so forth.

It is amazing to see the difference in price you pay for a trans-atlantic envelope with an enclosure. ( You guys pay between $ 1,50- $ 1,60). The German mail milks me for 8 Euros. Now that´s roughly 8 dollars...  I like the great idea of pencil solidarity in this world, and its great to open the mailbox to find something else than bills and trash... but this is liable to ruin me. I will try to be a sport for a while now, so first come first served is the motto.

I have found the lighter - it is not a Zippo, but a Japanese Generic make named Baldwin. It has an engraving, laid out in red - so and so electric company. Phone number. American give-away, my father gave it to me. I would think it´s from Kentucky. No area code. If it would be an addition to your collection that you desperately want...I´ll send it. If not, it´s the shop back up lighter. Greetings, Mathias Raulf    http://www.raulfcarpenters.com

Hey Matt, would you get offended if I asked some questions about working in Europe?  Seriously, I don't mean to offend you, and I'm not a wordly guy, but I have an impression of most modern European economies as quite a bit farther to the left than ours here in the States.  That is, far more government involvement in who can work, where, and how much they make etc.  Is that accurate?

Have you noticed a big change in the workforce since reunification?  Working conditions?  Wages?

        1. mathiasraulf | Oct 25, 2003 02:27pm | #278

How is it to work in Germany?

If you ask my american Trim-carpenter Chris it is very different. Everything is slower, more expensive, more government involvement - but in the end we have to drive nails just like you.

We have a three-phase career trail, that is controlled and governed by the State:

          # 1: apprenticeship at a master (you enter young, anywhere from 16 - 25 yrs.). Low pay,

1st yr. only #### (carry, load, clean-up and you may WATCH). Schooling half a week.

2nd yr. medium duty, already elevated to finer things, final exam as a Facharbeiter (worker)

3rd yr. Independant work, but supervised, final exam as a Geselle (journeyman).

If you want to start your own business, you´ll have to be a (#2) working Geselle for 3 yrs. and after that you can apply for (#3) Master-School (Master carpenter school/costly - 1 yr. no pay - about 10.000 $ in fees and what not)). Only then can you work and write bills.

What a Geselle makes is regulated by Union pay (minimum), and is exceeded if  very good or lowered (against the law) in an economic slump (as now). You see it seems very regulated over here: But everybody cuts as many corners as possible. Only if you are caught - well, the State collects stiff fines for violation of any of 1 million regulations.                                VERBOTEN

The workforce is expensive - after opening of the iron-curtain we have east Germans, Poles, Rumanians... you name it, flooding in and breaking up the german system (working for a fraction of the cost, only cash). Everybody laments this of course, but I think it was about time to break with these medieval traditions - get some competition is good - but only if you are better and can justify a higher price. It´s Darwinistic - we become more american - you become more european is what I thought. We have Codes, OSHA and a couple of other perrennial visitors...

Chris always says: Been there - done that - got the T-shirt.

Maybe he can tell you more - an american angle. BTW: He´s my best man!

Received pencils from JB Jump and John Walker today, thanks you guys.  Australia!  Yikes!

One international package, westbound, Monday morning.

"timbers" I'd forgotton that's what you guys call "lumber".  Cool.

Still awaiting a pencil from New England.  Man, those cats are frugal.

        Matt,

$8.00 is too much to mail pencils, if it cost us that much, I'd say there wouldn't be too many in the mail.

Wish you had told me before you mailed them. I would have insisted that you not send them. Just too much. You hang onto the lighter. Especially if your dad gave it to you, and I only collect Zippos.

i found some yellow Bic lighters, but checked at the Post Office and legally I can't send them to you. Not even on a slow boat. So sorry about that. You just have to stick to the Spanish and French ones.

        best regards from the U.S.

          Bee,

Sorry to confuse you with Jim Blodgett on the political info I´ll be sending. I will have to get used to your names - and I am very bad at names anyway.

Thank you for finding out about the BIC lighter.

Probably just for asking at the post-office you are now under steady supervision by the NSA, FBI and CIA. The thought that a combustible explosive could be sent through the mail...and via AIR MAIL could build a link to terror.  But if they are that good - This e-mail will clarify everything.

Funny, before 9/11 I have sent tools and everything in a big metal crate to Vienna via airfreight (and it was not more expensive than my seat, weighed the same (200lbs). I went to the airfreight guys, checked it in and it got on the same plane I went with. When I had my luggage and rental car, I was able to receive the box, with a padlock on it.

Of course I knew the regulations, but I needed mineral-spirits, Spray-cans...at he job. I thought - well....It was never opened, and could have been full of atomic waste, bombs, cocaine, weapons - you name it.

Queer is it not, that a BIC lighter could be a liability for disaster - to some bureucrat.

          Greetings, Mathias  raulfcarpenters.com

Practical thinking hell, just looking for a beer.

I fished the Rhine and the Danube in the mid sixties.  Didn't catch any.  Did they clean up those rivers?

Got a mercedes crunched on the way from the factory in stuttgart, on the way to Italy.  Baden Baden, circular town road (what do you call that when the roads enter or come upon a circle?) Thank you Jim,

your two pencils arrived perfectly. You are #2 on the waiting list for a bulk mailing. I will include some very old hand-wrought nails we tore out of wide-plank Douglas Fir. That floor was room-length (22 feet long planks,8" to 14" wide and 1 1/2" thick). Shame to take it out, when those tongues are splintering and flying around your ears. It was wormy, but minimal. I´d said the worms were all but gone for 100 yrs...but the architect insisted on a redo.

            Should I talk myself out-of a job?

The hard part was finding a substitute. In Denmark I was lucky. Look at http://www.dinesen-jels.dk

It is just a small mill...the quality of the crated shipped planks was sooo good. Have you seen 55 planks..all straight to a line, not one warped, all factory plugged and finish planed like glass? And they go together like a charm, no slack not too tight. I wondered: How do they do it? A friend visited the mill and found this out: Instead of sawing and then planing they reverse it. They plane to thickness, then tighten the plank with a vacuum table device (30 foot long thing) and send a twin circular-saw travelling on a rod system above down the wood. It malkes sense: we have this law in the first year of apprenticeship: If the wood is longer and heavier than the big machine get the small machine to the wood.

If you get to Austria - once over here .- maybe you could make it to Hamburg. It is really a beautiful city.

I was stationed in Wiesbaden, (till the unit was made to leave W. Germany per request  of the German Government....ROAR!!- went to Vicenza. They even had the nerve to make Hoensfeld, Weilflicken and Graffenwier off limits to us. The nerve of them) Eschborn, Bad Tolz and Augsburg.

Spent enough time in Saxenhausen to say I was stationed there too... Another hardy ROAR!!! Tried to get it as a TDY station but no body would see it my way.

Total time for Germany was just shy of 8 years... '74/'81

Germany and it's people are squared away.. Toured every where every chance I got even it was day trips. After getting sent to Italy I still made trips back to Germany on a regular basis...  Really like Germany...

The place was declared off limits to us in '76 two days after our first visit. Seems as though the PX grub station got trashed. The Piney Club burned to the ground and a "few" members of the 7th/11 were hospitalized.  Why any one would blame us for such things as that is beyound comprehension.

Again we got blamed for that too... Couldn't have been us. GH's were off limits and we would never have violated any of the directives laid down by V Corps. So we wern't there I'm tellin' ya.

Come to think of it, France didn't think much of us either.

Wow, 8 yrs. - that is a long time. Did you learn any german? What is a TDY station btw..

I really dug your answer on the meaning of IMERC - industrial mercenary! IMERC sounds like a big outfit, like Exxon - that name has the connotation to grand designs - the big picture...Could also be a military abbreviation, like MIRV - multiple independently guided reentry vehicle, or LASER - light amplification by serial emission of radiation.

How do you like: Infamous mangler of expensive roofing coil-nails.

You were stationed in the south, like my host-brother Ross ( I was an exchange student in the senior class of ´78, Gloucester/Ma.). He was in the Bamberg barracks 81-82- and I visited him there. The most vivid image I keep was:

Sunday morning, everybody a headache, in the TV-lounge: "Anything on?" - and them guys, Cavalry-tank guys, everyone...were watching roadrunner/Bugs bunnyflics with far away eyes.

In the german army (we still have the general draft) it was the same picture, just different TV-program...and god forbid...if the east had attacked on a Sunday morning, 4:30 GMT...5th of July...

Luckily them days are over...at least for now. If you feel like visiting-pass by the workshop. Theres coffee and a beer - and that goes for everyone here... I will gather a how-to do a Wiener schnitzel from a cook I know from Vienna. (Given the prerequisite: Lives in America, has to start from scratch). Just wait, it´s on the to-do list (backburner). Mathias

There´s two schools: One takes pork, the other veal as the basis. Both are correct. It is like protestants and catholics.

          10. mathiasraulf | Oct 27, 2003 10:58am | #290

            IMERC,

So here, for everybody that knows about Jäger-sauce - is the recipe.

Jägersauce: 100 grams Onions finely chopped/ 100 grams bacon-cut up into small cubes/ 100 grams mushrooms (you know, the regular), 50 grams of pickled cucumber chopped/ 1/8l red wine/ 1 tablespoon Tomato-paste

To do: Fry the bacon in vegetable oil to golden-brown, add onions and go on until glassy/yellow-brown, add mushrooms and the pickles shortly fry everything now, add tomatopaste, add red-wine and let everything come to a boil - shortly.

Now you need a ready made brown-sauce fix (amount for 1 liter), add that and let boil under constant heat until you have reached the right consistancy. Add Salt and Pepper and some chopped parsley.

You can use this recipe for all brown (german) sauces, but with different additions (red and yellow peppers for "Zigeuner"-style...).

The anchor point for brown sauces is always onions, Tomato-paste, red wine and brown sauce-powder. Please add whipped cream (as fat and fresh as possible) just before serving for the final touch...

The meat: Normally you take veal (expensive), but you can substitute fine pork cut into thin slabs.

Cordon bleu will be filled with ham and Gouda-cheese (from Holland), take a mallet and beat on your meat (but be careful to not punch too hard...no holes here), put ham and cheese into meat, like an envelope (can fold it like the cocaine packages), salt - take a plate with flour, immerse package, cover with flour on all outsides, try to press-seal all the seams so they don´t open up in the friteuse or pan (hot oil bake - very hot - keep extinguisher at hand - never try to ext. an oil fire with water), take the floured thing into an egg and then into  bread-crumbs (fine). You can fry this at 180 degrees (Celsius) in the fying pan. That goes for Wienerschnitzel too...same without the filling.

Got this first hand from a great cook coming from Vienna.

ENJOY Mathias. For the German beers you´ll have to visit me!

P.S.: You guys will have to do the math on your construction-master...

Yes, brown gravey it is. I will try to send you some ready-made brown Jägersaucemix from Knorr (so you canmatch the taste). Any fluid cream will do, or if you want to be fancy: French sour cream on top. Tell me about your results...Mathias (Beat the meat, now)

If you go into business as an Oma & Opa restaurant, send me the busine$$ ###. Don´t let anybody steal this. (There´s Jägerschnitzel, Cordon-bleu, Wiener-Schnitzel (served with a lemon), Zigeunerschnitzel...). How about this: A webcam interactive-online cooking class with my Vienna cook as a tutor, he´s a funny guy worked on cruise ships for 15 yrs. and now has a little restaurant with his wife)

We have the Knorr brand here. I'll look to see if there is sauce mix. I always considered their soups pretty good but a little salty. Hopefully it's the same.

I must be living on another planet. That stuff seems to be reserved for the cities. When gambling was leagelized in the near me all of that came with it. Many of use don't care for it and don't support any of it. I'm in the dark ages when it comes to that.

Do you suppose that Oma and Opa will be offended? There was a German resturant in Canyon City run by an ex-GI that did a fine job. I was worth the trip. (1-3/4 hours one way.) Unfotunately he and his wife split up and the placed closed. There are several German places in the Springs. Way over priced and the food is only so so on a good day. 60$ average for a basic small serving per person.

Okay so when do we get started? Gotta beat working in the blisterng heat or mind numbing cold. You choice of names is pretty good too.

I'll think about how I did things and then I'll make up some more and try it out on the help and see what they have to say about it. Usally any thing I cook is well recieved. One of those huge basting pans of lasagna only lasts for one meal.Same for the Salmon, Trout, Orange Ruffy, Chuckers and Pheasant.

There is no recipe for any of this. Kinda That looks about right... That should do formula.

Oma & Opa are not offended...

You do know its only the noun for granma + granpa? Wow, 60$ per person - w.o. beer and wine? What a scheme. I always thought american restaurants are stiff, but wow. I´ll serve, be bus boy...we need a german baker, butcher, Viennoise cook and some cool blonde Walküre as a barmaid. Lederhosen? You´d think we got a market...

(BTW.: Do you think you could send me a carton if I send you the money (cash) first? It just has to be privately wrapped (Oma & Opa style). You can declare: used socks and cigarettes...German duty-guys might not check.

Rape is more like it. 2 people . Full diner allis. 200$.

Small portions and the food is only so - so. The scnitzels are about 10x14x1CM w/ 50ML of sauce. The veal is tough, the pork is stringy and the place is always crowded. Go figure.

Kit, Darcy, pencils arrived yesterday, thank you both.  When I get out from under this mountain of paperwork I'll get to the post office and reciprocate.

Hey Kit, you might find a servicable router in you're price range at a pawn shop.  Just an idea if push comes to shove.

Darcy - nice card, classy.  Is that your business?

Rich - I really liked the green lettering on your card and the choice of fonts was good too.  Well done.

            Jim,

No need to reciprocate, you already sent me one. I was just replacing my earlier mailing that got chewed.

Finally went out to the job shack here at school yesterday to bum some Las Vegas pencils. Foreman hands me five or six (Cool!) get back to my room and look at them. DOH!

They're all from Labor Ready or similar, none of them say Las Vegas on them, I may just have to write my name on 'em and send out. Don't know when I'll be able to get more and I need to resend to IMERC and Bee and maybe Andy and I've had an envelope with Darcy's address sitting here for at least a week. I keep meaning to hit up some of the subs, but I feel bad interrupting them and their breaks and mine never seem to coincide.

Jim, we have a local sleazy tool place. Reflection there is kind of the same as Ebay. They either have high end stuff (still too pricey) or newer, all plastic Crfatsman crap. One gentleman from Knots emailed me. It sounds like that might come through. Otherwise I'll keep looking around. I've found in the past when doing the ebay thing, usually about two weeks after I give up, I'll check back and there's a bunch of what I was looking for.

Wow, I'm glad to hear they arrived. Sorry, they didn't have any location printed on them. I tried to track some down, with no luck.

"Darcy - nice card, classy.Ê Is that your business?"

No, my employer. I'm an exterior trim carpenter, but served as warranty manager for about 8 months, (reason for the cards). I should have said, my-soon-to-be-ex-employer. They're laying-off a bunch of us in two weeks, and will only be re-hiring 1/4 of the crew. Ê: (

I did have to adapt a little.

Sour crean instead of wipped cream and tomato paste instead of sauce. Over all it was it scrumpous.

Used range veal. (hardier flavor) Think I'll try it with Elk and Riendeer next.

Almost didn't have enough room for the baked potatoe and veggies. The snitzel was so good I didny want to bother with the side dishes.

I always thought TDY stood for  "temporary duty yonder".

"Graf" what a frikkin' hell hole that place was.  We used to go there for a month once a year for training,  '73-'77.  Lived in GP mediums, either froze or baked.

Bad Tolz, Bad Tolz, been there too, but can't precisely place it.  Was that the training facility down by Garmisch?  Or was there maybe a big casino there maybe?  On the edge of the Black Forest?

Long as we're eatin' German for lunch I'll have goulash soupen, pommes frittes and a Weizten, bitte.  Maybe for dinner I'll have a pepper (feffer?) schnitzel.

I think it was '74. The order from range controll was GREEN. 12.5k shot on a 800# range seemed to be the straw that broke the camel's back. Also there were 2 helos in over flight at the precise moment. We were told to get out of Doge - Never to return.

Bad Tolz down by Garmish was "the" training area not the casino.

        Matt,

Instead of mailing the pencils out one at a time, wait until you have several to go and mail them all in one envelope to one of us who can then repackage and remail to the intended recipients. Sure to save a lot of money that way.

I would be happy to do the remailing if you want.

Reminds me of some things my father collects - bricks (with the quarry name on it) about 40 so far, ashtrays (800-ish), and coathangers with the name/addess of the cleaner or hotel - 2400 at last count.

Maybe a bit more like the Hams (amateur radio operators) that send each other a postcard with their call sign when they make contact. Obscure and distant contacts are more highly valued.

And like that, this seems like a mostly harmless vice .

Whoa.  AJ took the decoder book with him.  Think all the rings batts went dead.  How I got the hat?  Well, not at liberty to say.  They used to give one with a new subscription I think, and have heard the originals are now gone, but also think I remember hearing that they made up more.  You need to know someone on the inside, someone who has the key to the hat room.  You sweet talk 'em, maybe spring for a beer, or just plain ask.

I would trade a hat in the box for an XL-T in a bag.

And darcy, there's really no secrets.

            "t-shirts"?  Did someone say "t-shirts"?

I could use a t-shirt, XL.  I'd prefer ash or maroon, but anything would be fine.  Oh man, this is great.  Hey!  You think we could talk them into printing a few  long sleeved with a few buttons at the neck?  Those are my favorites this time of year.  (well if they're gonna give Mikey a collar and lacey sleeves they could spring for long sleeves for those of us exposed to the elements couldn't they?)

"pencils" too?  Yeah, that'd be great.  Fine Homebuilding pencils.  Maybe flat soft lead for framing and foundations and hexagonal ear pencils with about a 2+1/2 lead for trim?  What could be a better promotional gift than a few pencils?  Now you folks are talkin'.

You know...now that we're talkin'...about every carpenter I know has a cup of coffee in the morning.  Think maybe we could get a coffee cup?

            Matt,

i'll let you know when they arrive and have them out in the mail the next day to the other fellows.

I have to admit that I really hate to use any pencil that comes from so far away, but maybe I'll us it on a special project.

Talking about it being Swiss made reminds me of a story that my father told me. This would have been decades ago, but the American military

made a drill bit, the smallest ever. Small enough to drill a hole in a human hair. With great pride they sent it to the Swiss to brag. It was returned with a hole drilled in it.

            Best regards,

Heard that whaile I was still a teen.

The way I heard it, they not only drilled a hole in it, they put a machine bolt through it, and put a nut on the bolt.

The arrival of round shank nails was not cheered by the older carpenters I know. The square shank nails are able to withstand pullout loads much better. I thought about this: Is it that there is more friction to the sides? More contact area. And they would compress the wood more, because they split more (the fibers). Does anybody know more about this?

Same with screw drives: Old timers like the slit screw, the advent of Phillips, then Pozidrive was in the late 60´s over here, now we got TORX (and some offbeat TORX versions). I really like the square drive best (less wear on the driver, less stripping) but this is unavailable in Germany. I import them for my Kreg Jig.

What is unnerving? You have to carry a wide assortment of drivers and bits around. Sometimes four different drives in one project.

The slit screws generally are the least appreciated (cam out...). But they are the most beautiful...and unbeat for getting out when they have been dug deep and covered with paint or spackle. But this is another thread I guess. Enjoy the pencils and geetings to your beautiful country.

Matt, not sure on the round verses square more surface area I guess,

down here screws for carpentry are either phillips head or pozzi drive, I try to stick with p.head to make life easy, have used square drive before and like them although they are not common here and are still a bit expensive.

Neil, Calvin, Barry - got your pencils today, thanks!

Phillips have all but replaced slotted screws here in the States, at least in the building industry.  My favorite is that combo head that take either a square drive or #3 phillips driver.  First saw them on deck screws 4, maybe 5 years ago.  Man, those #3 phillips are a man sized screw tip.  Those things don't seem like they EVER cam out, screw gun will stall out before those things slip.

Slotted screws remind me of 3/4 extension drawer slides, I don't know why they even make them anymore.

Thanks Barry, got 'em ystdy and oddly, mailed yours this am.

Jim, did I remember to pack a sticker in the envelop?  How much mileage you gonna get on that envelop?

Those combo screws certainly are a good idea.  I hate changing out holders.  But for deck type screws that show, I really like those FastenMaster, with the turned down heads.  Good holding, colored now I believe to common decking colors, and a small head.

             Jim,

I have seen Lebron play 50 or 60 games in person, at the high school level. ( I still regret that a scheduling conflict prevented rich beckman and I  from meeting up in Dayton ,Ohio to watch a game last year.

when the Cav's players really understand what Lebron is about----the entire teams level of play will improve considerably. It's gonna take time for NBA players to understand that he IS gonna get them the ball.

            Calvin,

I don't watch that much nba,or college basketball.

I kind of "re-discovered" basketball about 9 years ago when I found myself coaching 3rd grade boys cyo basketball. We would take the kids to see Akron U games---and a year or so later we started taking kids on the team to see St.V-M games( this was years before Lebron showed up). St.V-M was where my wife and I (high school sweeties)went to school and where my son's were destined to go( I have one 9th grader and one 10th grader)

I greatly prefer a GOOD high school game---because they play DEFENSE and use the whole court. I love to see a team so deep in talent they can run a full court press the entire game, I like to see kids hustle, dive on the floor for loose balls, and hurdle the scorers table to try to save an out of bounds ball.enthusiasm for the GAME.

Tho my daughter has left HS, my wife and I still attend the bball games.  Pure sport as you noted.  St.V-M was sold out the one time they played here 2 yrs ago.  And that was at U of Toledo field house, so I'd never seen him play till last yr when they started televising those couple games.  It should be interesting watching him develop.  Hope the team does as well.  How's the St V-M team gonna look this year?  We can do this offline if you don't wanna bog down the exchange.Remodeling Contractor just outside the Glass City.

             calvin,

I had season tickets so I was able to get those tickets in Toledo as well.

I haven't seen the St.v-m team play this year yet( season hasn't started)---but what I hear is----the team will run the same kind of game, It won't be a national power, but will be a very good highschool team. Smaller, excellent ball handling.Team is coached by Dru Joyce sr.as the last few years. Dru jr. graduated last year and is playing at akron U-----his younger brother will play as a freshman at St.V-M this year and is reputed to be even better that Dru jr.

historically, this teams full court press for most of the game has won A LOT of games for them. I have watched a LOT of playoff teams' fans the past few years near tears cause their kids couldn't get the ball past half court without a turnover. I love DEFENSE.

Never met chrissy ----although I love her stuff. I especially love they way she is not afraid to point out the negative aspects of change----although some politicians here would disagree with her.

don't know about fairmount-----although there is a modestly prosperous older suburb here called Fairlawn. fairmount might be a golfcourse up cleveland way--------.

BTW, I am sorry that I didn't know you were around Toledo and interested in high school basketball. I had a lot of tickets last year I could of shared with you----you could have seen some amazing stuff.

            Matt,

I use old hand wrought "rose head" nails as well as new reproduction hand made nails on a regular basis and I would have to say that the reason they hold so well is the sharp point and the tapered shaft. The blunt point on the cut nails breaks the wood fibers and crushes them on the way in. They come back out much more easily. Modern wire nails can't hold as well, but much easier and cheaper to make.

I checked out your web site. Nice.

bee glad they got there safely, I sent out about 10 packages on friday, finally got off my lazy asz and did it lol.

One came back with "not enough postage" or something wrong with it, funny because the lady weighed all of them, can't remember which one, but it will go out again soon......  I was wondering if I was going to get a bunch back in the mail with return to sender on them.

Neil, got your pkg and Imerc's today as I was mailing out the returns to those sent.  Next trip to the P.O. will be to you guys.  I know the feeling of finally getting off the butt and posting them off.

            Guys,

I have recieved a bunch of the pencils and was keeping the envelopes to keep track of who to send back to. but my wife thought the empty envelopes were trash and out they went. I have Barry Elings, Neil Gaskin, Greg Werner and Greg Fowler's addresses because they just came. Jim Blodgett I have your address and Rich Beckman I have yours from your business card (great idea BTW Rich) but any others, and there are others, I don't have your name's and addresses. I'm sorry but if you could send me an email with your info I'll get those sent out. my email is [email protected]

On a side note the yard I deal with most of the time doesn't have pencils. their prices and service are outstanding so I'm not going to bitch about pencils but that leaves me with 84 lumber pencils that have no address on them. I hope that is okay? if not I'm open to suggestions.Steve

            Brian and everyone else.

Sent an email to Andy Engel telling him about the pencil exchange. He said that if we send him our address in an email, he will send us a pencil.

As far as anything else, who knows?

Also, sorry I haven't sent the pencils out to anyone yet. I have been able to get some recently with local suppliers names on them. Will try to send them out next week.

And, thanks to those who have already sent pencils to me.

you need to be careful with those nails i heard that in those days if they were moving house they would burn the old one down and save the nails as they were the most expensive part of the house

maybe you should save them for your next project???!!!

I'd be willing to give it a try. I'll have to work at it, though. The company I work for gives out pencils, but they're hard to come by. The salesmen snap them up pretty quickly.

Who's gonna work out the details? Like swapping addresses and such?

            Gentlemen,

Or---I suppose I should say Ladies and Gentlemen as I somehow gather Darcy is a gal------

My wife heard me snickering at the computer over a "bunch of guys that need to get a life"----she wanted an explaination of what my muttering was about-----and when I explained the mechanics of the "pencil exchange"-----well let's just say she thinks it's great. Apparently it reminds her of doing math homework with her Dad's carpenter pencil.

so----Hazlett Roofing & Renovation Ltd. is prepared to enter the exchange. I have about 25 pencils each from 2 different lumberyards( 50 total)

One local yard that's been around for 50 plus years and another that's been around for 80 plus years. In fact my grandpa used to do business with the 80plus year old yard----and at one time had a contract with them to build voting booths back in the depression.

I will be sending out pencils to Darcy,Brian,Jim,Andy, and Kit tomorrow morning.

In addition to pencils---I will send company t-shirts, while supplies last ,to anybody outside of the country who sends me a pencil. I will be re-ordering an older, better style of shirts in the spring and would be happy to swap t-shirts when a larger supply is available.

You sent me one pencil but I got two when I opened up the envelope. The nail and letter came through ok.

I was suprised how similar the nail is to the house I am working on now. The house was most likely built around the early 1800s . I guess nails were the same for some time.

I stuck one of my business cards in the envelopes with the name of the lumberyard and it's full address on the back. I did that because the pencil says only "674-3341 Lumbertown" There is no indication of what part of the country it is in.

Also, I have this nagging thought that one of the envelopes didn't get the business card. Whoever gets that one (if it exists), sorry.

            Jim,

got your pencil in the mail yesterday. I don't know if the 2 I sent you got through----but since I got another style of pencil to send out---maybe I will re-mail you a package.

by the time you collect all these pencils from around the country----they will stack up to a big enough pile to set my sheet metal brake on that ya stole!

Andy,----the envelope that I sent to you came back to me shredded and empty----I will re-send ya some pencils.

I have 5 new adresses to send pencils to---try to get those out today

BTW----CAG (Neil)---If you don't have a pencil to send me----a picture of that young girlfriend you are living with will do! LOL

I got your pencil today.  Sounds like a neat lumber yard. I told my wife that if I get enough pencils I'm going to make a shadow box to display them in.....she thinks I'm weird, maybe I am. I'll put yours in the mail Monday.

            Hi Greg,

Matt's package arrived today and I just put your package in the mail.

I also tossed in a couple of special pencils from me.

You'll know who sent what when you see them, the pencil from Matt is way longer than any I have ever seen in the States. Matt also sent a hand made nail for each of you. If this little shipment from Buffalo doesn't wreck the postal machines...............

            Hi Karl,

Welcome board the great Pencil Exchange.

I will also be sending a package your way tomorrow.

Not sure if you picked up on it, but don't mail pencils in regular letter or business envelopes. They won't make it through the automated sorting machines.

Bubble mailers work the best. I just reuse them whenever I get pencils in.

            Thanks again for joining in.

            Jim,

Thanks for letting me know the package arrive safely.

Try that red lead pencil out. The lead is soft and it is much more like a china marker. Great on any vinyl products, poor on metal. and very colorful on wood. You just have to sharpen it a lot, and a dull blade pulls the lead out.

            Hey now......

            let's keep it friendly here.

I live and work in a small town in Southwest Missouri.

You gotta work with what the customer's want.

I can safely say that 95% of the homes built in a four county area have vinyl siding on them. And IMHO, it beats the heck out of 12" masonite lap.

The local lumberyard can get Hardi, but it is a special order item. Big deal to get a price quote on it.

Just checked...makes a great mark on Azek, too.

have a great day, raining and cold hereView Image

I'm going to send my first batch out this weekend, is there any concensus on the best way to package these things, I was thinking small padded minela (sp) envelopes with tape across the top.

So how have the pencils that weren't shreaded by the USPS packaged?

          64. vanderpooch | Oct 17, 2003 10:25pm | #206

            CAG,

I think the padded half sheet size envelope seems to work the best. Both the pencils I got from Jim Blodgett and Bee were intact in this type. Tape em to some cardboard. Someone posted that this size doesn't go through the sorter like standard envelopes.

I'll put you on my list when I get some more pencils...

My company doesn't have company logo pencils, only keychains. They are metal though, so they can be engraved on the back. In fact, the only pencils I have say: Cheap Joe's Art Stuff

Would a keychain be a fair exchange for a pencil?

(The only t-shirts they give me are size small.)

The company I work for is pretty tight with pencils. Last time they had some made I got 6 to give out. Had to steal a few from the salesmen so I'd have some to give out.....................(-:Joan of Arc heard voices, too.

            Boss,

I don't know about the best way, but I just took a piece of cardboard and folded in half so it was about the size of a business envelope.

Stapled three sides, slid the pencil in, stapled in closed, and then taped the edges so noone gets hooked on a staple leg. Not as simple as dropping it in a padded one, but it cost nothing.

Boss, if you will email your address, I'll get yours out to you.

            Best regards,

            Brian

I just got back from the post office - 49 cents to mail one pencil inside a business size envelope anywhere in the lower 48.  As soon as David's gets here from Alaska, I'll know how much that costs.

Just address the envelope, put in a pencill, stick a couple stamps on it and drop it in the mail box.  Couldn't be much easier.   Sure hoping to get some from folks in the coming months.

          11. DavidThomas | Oct 05, 2003 01:48pm | #56

"As soon as David's gets here from Alaska, I'll know how much that costs.

            "

We are, actually, one of the states. Not that we talk that way. When people say, "I'm going outside", they don't mean the backyard. Or, "You going to the states this winter?"

Two pencils and a bit of cardboard weighed an ounce even, but I thought I remember oversized and non-flat things being a minium 2-ounce rate.

            Brian,

Yes. The package arrived. I see you recycled Calvin's folded cardboard. Sorry I have been remiss in acknowledging it's arrival. I've been putting most of my computer time into catching up some of my accounting...end of the year getting close.

Obviously, I am now considered to have stolen the green pencil from you?? First time I've had my victim voluntarily mail the loot.

And the very nice red pencil is from Matt. Thanks Matt.

And the white pencil is, I'm guessing from Brian.

If so, that makes four pencils from Brian. Thank-you...and thanks for forwarding Matt's.

I'm keeping a log of addresses on everyone who sends me a pencil. If I find myself out of town and near a different yard, I'll try and get more.

            Karl,

I received your package today. Thanks for the pen. So I guess I am now in possesion of a second stolen item. Hope the police don't stop by to peruse the collection.

Good pencil and nice business card.

Did you have to pay for those pens with the typo??

Hey.  You been listening to that Blues show Saturday mornings right after Car Talk on NPR?  Man oh man, one of the high points in my weekly routine.

"Talkin' to yourself again, Rich.  Better lay off those books for awhile."

It's the books?!?!? I'd of never thought of that, and I just had a long chat with myself on the subject. Thanks for the tip.

"You been listening to that Blues show Saturday mornings right after Car Talk on NPR?  Man oh man, one of the high points in my weekly routine."

I'm not sure the local NPR stations here carry that show (unless it is the middle of the night.

But I think it was on Saturday mornings about ten years ago or so. I do remember listening to an NPR Blues show on Saturday mornings while doing work in the back yard. That was a great show.

I was at Calvin's yesterday and he played a Eddie Kirkland CD. Really nice Blues. I'm gonna have to look further into Eddie.

            Rich,

I ordered those pens thru the internet. I typed the order into the order form the wrong way. It was my fault so I did not feel right trying to get another 450 for free. It is kind of fun to see if anyone catches the typo.

An old client of mine did the art work for my co. I get a lot of complments on the cards and the letterhead.

Hey Karl - FINALLY got myself together and sent your package out today.  Geez, yours arrived about 2 weeks ago and I just couldn't seem to focus long enough to open it and reply.  Thanks for the pen (had to read it about 17 times to fing the typo) and pencil - nice business card, too.  You do a lot of hand hewing?

            You anywhere near New Ringold?

Thanks for the message Jim. I live in SE PA. 35 miles East of Philly.

Depending on the project I may hewn quite a bit. Then I can go for a year or two and not even touch one of my axes.

            Curly ...

Last Tues when I picked up mail it wasn't there....

            Today it was...

Your pen and  pencil arrived finally.

By what can be read from the post marks starting in PA. It was then post marked in Mobile, AL. Some how found it's way for a post mark in Seattle - on to Denver and then dropped south to Colorado Springs. Now to me. Every thing was in perfect condition.

Amazing how far one stamp will take some thing. Think geography lessons or an up dated map for the USPS are in order?

BTW the pen fits well and writes nicely. I'll have no problem ignoring the typo. Make a few myself.

Hey!  Our son is over in Austria for the school year, right?  So Kathy and I sent him a Christmas package a few weeks ago.  We talk on the phone every Sunday, and the first week it's "...we sent your package".

The next week it's "...did your package arrive?"  "Not yet."

Next call - "...gee, package still hasn't shown up."

After about a month it's - "Your package finally arrived.  There's marking on it that say it went through customs in Australia (then Austria)!"

We got quite a chuckle out of that one.

I've got a few nice ones. They're from the yard that my dad, and grandfather, and great grandfather owned. Closed in the '80s when interest rates went through the roof. Not giving those up though! Other yards here are too cheap to give out a decent pencil, especially now that HD is in town. So I guess I'm out. Great idea though!

Red lead?  I've been on crews that used one color chalk to make corrections - so say you were framing away and came to two different snapped lines, you'd know which was the correct one to work to.  You suppose that's what red lead is for too?

Never saw a red carpenter's pencil.  Hey!  You suppose that's what they use in Eastern Europe?

Sorry for the temporary highjack all... Not a total highjack though I am interested in getting in on this pencil exchange, so hows it work, yeah I know you send a pencil you get one, so who wants one?

Jim, I couldn't remember what thread you had your sign question in, here's a pic of the type we use at work, this one is in for a little refurbishing, and I suddenly realized I am not that great of a photographer so it doesn't show much detail,

All in all though, it's not exactly very ornate anyway, keeps it cheap to replace when  some moron steals one

I can post a picture of the drive in steaks, but they sell them almost every hardware or lumber yard around here, so you probably know what they look like.

My only advice is to cut them down, I believe they come around 2' long which is a real pain not only in driving them, but the real pain is pulling them if the ground hardens around them.  I cut ours down to around 15 inches and they seem to hold just fine.

Terrorist plot to destroy the US Postal System.

"Unknown terrorists, in a plot to destroy the postal system have begun sending packasges with pieces of wood and nails to destroy the postal sorting machines. Packages have been mailed from all over the US,although some do get thru the machines."View Image

I'm in, just got some pencils today.

            Lawrence, KS 66044

            #### damn son of &%$@

Just typed a long reply about the post stakes, and it got prospero'd

            so here goes again.

Picture of the stake I am talking about below. (Picture will come as soon as I figure out how to clear my available space here, just been told I have exceded it?)

Ok, so the post stakes keep the sign level,  since there are two you just have to drive one deeper to compensate for the other, or vise versa if you wasn't to look at it that way. Don't EVER drive either of them totally into the ground you need at least a few inches to grab on to to pull them.  At least in any resemblance of an easy manner.  Occasionally if the sign has been in the ground for a while in hard clay or something it's easier to get a car screw jack to pull them out.  Usually I'll hook a length of 2x4 under the tabs to use as a lever.

Not all stakes are created equal, the ones made out of thinner metal do not hold up, HD carries the thin ones out here, the lumber yard has thicker walled ones.

Setting the sign plumb and level, at least reasonably is a PITA.  Figure on 20-30 minutes once you finally got a system down.  Heres mine:

put them on the sign, not attached just inside of it and figure where you want the sign, angle etc.  You could just find center to center and measure, but I don't bother.

start the posts in the ground and drive each one a little at a time, 3-4" then check the stake for level and plumb, if the steaks are not level and plumb the sign won't be either and it's a bitch to adjust after you drive them all they way down.  3-4" adjust, 3-4" adjust, 3-4" adjust....

carry some 2x around  to place ACROSS THE TOP of the stake, don't EVER be tempted to use a scrap of 4x4 or even 2x4 inside the stake to beat on with the sledge.  It will not come out, just mashes and spreads it self out (Did it once and had to drill a bunch of holes and chisel out the wood because it was so wedged in)

I keep meaning to have a jig fabricated to slip inside of the stake made out of metal 1/2" or thicker plate to handle the abuse and keep the proper spacing etc.  You'll eat up a lot of wood banging on it driving these in, so take a couple few pieces with you, not just one.

Once you get the stakes in, don't use the little tab things on the side which are meant for bolts to clamp the sign in they do not spring back and they only chew up the post.  Some of the stakes come with holes in the side, if not drill some in and just put a few screws in.  The insides of the stakes are bigger then 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 so carry some shims with you to make your final adjustments, you can also put some cut up shims in the bottom if you're not completely level.

Boss always says, No reason to have a sign if it's not level and plumb, cause if you can't put a sign in level and plumb, why should anyone trust you to build that way.. Some truth in that, but I still curse everytime I hear it.

Have I mentioned this is PITA?

Well it's not really that bad once you learn what not to do, sorry for the length but I thought I'd try to warn you of every problem and "trick" I've learned.  Apparently setting signs is closer to rocket science then it is to basket weaving.

Well I sent out 6 packages yesterday----one came back returned to sender---the one destined for Brian Sipes.

I goobered up a re-packaging job and sent it back out.

In the meantime I got a couple dozen more pencils from a "new" lumberyard---new to me anyhow as it is about 45 minutes away and dates back to 1889.

I guess I should send those out as well---but I am kinda afraid to go to the post office again----I hate to think what will be stolen from my truck NEXT trip!

I knew theives were stupid, but broad daylight at a post office, someone had to see it.

I could have got some from a lumber yard thats been around since about that time, except some dipsh!t decided to take a torch to the place a few days ago.  I'm not sure if it is open or not, I think only half burned, but I have to assume they're taking a few days/weeks off to clean up a bit.

Hey IMERC, my mailing address is back in the beginning of this thread.  Send me a pencil and I'll reciprocate man.

Thanks everybody, keep 'em coming. (I was thinking those pencils from Australia or New Zealand might come in handy for marking the bottoms of things)

I'll try to send you one from our Meeks, too!

As far as smaller pencils go, I usually use round ones, often from my ten-year-old's pencil box. Because most of them are pink or flowered, they rarely make it to anyone else's toolbelt! hee hee

Hope this will work for you to find it.

The name of the thread is "workin' for a livin'".

You were pretty distracted in that thread.

The was a Porter Cable 743 (lefty) and a hat that you liked that belonged to Goldhiller that you liked and everyone here had one like it except you and me. (did you ever get that Fedora you were wanting?)

31775.112 was the message that darcy posted her picture in.

Imerc sent me a panama hat. It's a pretty good hat. Not the same, but fairly close. I like it.

I am wearing it in the quakefest pictures. (The real pictures, not the doctored ones. Someone doctored a fedora in there, and then I got comments in email about the great hat. LOL)

Works just fine for me. I just bookmark the page while the thread is open.

            Luka,

I saw those 'fixed" up pictures. It was a fine looking hat.

You should not give up on getting one.

It's one of those hats that not just everyone can get away with wearing.

Don't think it would work for me.

Maybe if we ask really nice, Darcy will give us an updated picture.

Maybe something with her nail bags on.

Imerc was stuck. Unambulatory, as the result of a car accident.

He had an employee, to whom he gave the responsibility of sending me a virgin dick tracy hat, along with another, which I can't remember the type right now. (Filson's ???)

This employee REALLY liked the hats that were to be sent to me. She apparently picked up another hat or two as well.

When I got the package, she had kept the good hats. She sent me one of the "other" hats. An old panama. It's a good hat. An original that isn't made anymore. I like the hat. I actualy wear it. (BTW: Imerc, it fits very well, now that I have chopped off my pony tail.)

But it's not that virgin dick tracy, or filson's...

Apparently the good hats ended up on the head of this girl's EX boyfriend... Imerc is still working on getting them back.

Hey, I would have asked Darcy myself, but I was afraid she would just run away from a scarey looking mountain man. Maybe you or someone else a bit more silver-tongued can get a better pic from her ? (To be honest, I was quite piqued by the pic we did get.)

I don't have pencils to trade. It's been years since I lifted my hand in the trade for real. (Been trying to figure out a way to get someone to send me a box of those round baby's though. LOL)

I got one more in a shreaded envelope.

Gonna have to get some help on this one.

        Note inside from........

        It was from Michigan.

The pencils was okay, from CML

Note is okay, but address and name are shreaded.

Yeah, I have several different tradables, how many different do you want. Even have a couple of "dot coms".

        Email me with your address.

        Thanks,

      Hi Jim,

Got a pencil from you today. BVut only because the guys at the PO were very nice.

The envelope was in shreads and in a plastic bag with the pencil included.

      Thanks,

"The envelope was in shreads and in a plastic bag with the pencil included."

Geez, sorry about that.  I got one today from Michigan the same way, inside a bigger envelope with a clear panel on it.  I'm gonna have to start taking more care packing. I just reused the cardboard package you sent me, that was a beauty.

IMERC - was that you who sent me three from Colorado?  You folks who go by user names here online have to let us know who the heck you are in the U.S. mail!

The padded envelope came in A1 condition, in fact it is on it's way back home tomorrow.

Talked to the guy at the Post Office today and regular envelopes go through the sorter but padded and weird homemade ones,(like mine) are handles by hand.

I was just wondering how many miles we can get on one of these pacages.

I have the afternoon off, so I will get a pair on the way to him today.

Also, finally have the address for the pencil from Michigan, (I hope I have it right), going to mail to him today, also.

I've got plenty to send out, just need a place to send them.

Hi, I´d send you a pencil from hereabouts. The best european ones are made by Caran d Áche, Switzerland, just the right hardness and cedarwood. I have a couple of them to send anyone willing to trade.

Also have yard pencils, but zthe wood is beech, a bitch to sharpen with even a sharp chisel.

    So how does this work?

Hamburg?  Cool.  I'll send you a couple from the Pacifc Northwest, Mathias.

Back in the early 70s I helped a fellow down around Stutgart (sp?) build a house.  Used to go help on my off days, they'd feed me, even spent Christmas Day with them one year.

Did I mention they had a teenaged daughter who liked rock & roll and laughing?  Geez, hadn't thought about those folks in years - thanks for that.

Anyways, I'll get those out Friday.

            Bee,

Thanks for the pencils, and your envelope design worked out great I'll reuse it like Jim and make a couple new one's too.

I posted a couple of times when the old format was up but, I just got too busy with work, working on our house, and we have a six month old boy that I don't want to miss growing up. So I would just get on the computer when I could.

You brought my current pencil count up to 82 different pencils. Some are from the same yard but, have different designs or colors.

I'll send out some of my doubles to you guy's after I go to the post office tomorrow.

            HI Jim,

it would have been Stuttgart. I have an american carpenter working here, who shares shop space and does jobs with me. He is a very gifted craftsman, used to be a finish carpenter in the US. - and/but is not afraid of grunt work (like carrying 5 palettes of sheetrock into the second floor).

He has this "can do" attitude, that we lack in Germany. And says Good morning with a smile on his face. I can practice my english.

            Thank you for sending pencils.

I´ll be gone for a week, but will send pencils to everybody as they come in.

            Thank you,

I'd rather not think about it.

I didn't know of the other two yards that burned down, but I really liked Schutte, didn't go there often, but the place was one serious lumber yard.  It's the one place I would call when I couldn't find something anywhere else, and was never let down.

I like your displays. I've been pondering the pencil display idea.

I was thinking about building a frame with glass front, like an ant farm box. Making it just thick enough between glass and back to slide the pencils in, so they touched edge to edge. Make the top removable and just drop in any new pencils.View Image

            Well SH*T!

What does the post office do to this stuff!  I just received two fully shredded envelopes, one from Andy Clifford and one from GregF.

Andy's pencil was broken in half, even in his homemade cardboard envelope.

Greg's two pencils were reduced to about a teaspoon of graphite dust and some red and white crumbs. His note was torn into four pieces.

I've sent out nine packages, to bee, blodgett, imerc, honeydoos, mr. hazlett, andy c. toolin63, john austin, and bryan klakamp. Have any of them made it to you guys? I used a standard envelope (though high quality) with the pencils taped to cardboard and wrapped in a sheet of typing paper.

Now I fear I'm in trouble...

Should have listened to Blodgett and Bee...

            And All...

I think the biggest problem here is that you are all trying to make the package as standard as possible.

Forget standard. Make the package strong. A cardboard box, maybe. But make it a box. Make it some size that is obviously not going to fit into some machine. Then, no half-witted PE will try to make it fit into a machine, (built to handle a standard sized envelope.), it won't get stuck, it won't get destroyed.

Who cares that the box would have a lot more room in it than needed. (Stuff it with wadded paper, or bubble wrap or something. Tape the pencil in place.) Who cares if it gets to the destination a couple days later. It should at least get there in one piece.

Can't we all just get a log ? - Paul Bunyon

I sent out pencils to Darcy,Brian Sipes,Jim Blodgett,Andy Clifford, Kit Camp, and Brian Klakamp. These were the adresses posted here---and all that I have on record.

since I simply dropped them in a standard business envelope and re-inforced the short edges with scotch tape----I now have little hope of their safe arrival. If mypencils to make it to you folks, let me know and I will re-send in a more postal proof packaging.

That was a pretty heavy duty pack I made all duct taped together.....my guess is that postal workers aren't all that honest.....I got some splinters sent to me as well.....

            Be postal

I have actually run out of Austin Hardwood pencils, so I have to scrounge some more. When I do I'll send 'em out in a padded envelope....Sorry,

            Kit

            Kit.

Services were held for your pencils.

The USPS can be most unkind to things of importantence.

Yeah, I got a check in the mail for a grand once that was ripped in two, they were nice enough to put it in a new envelope with a nice apology letter from the post office.

Man, I am so sorry to hear about your break.

            I'd be 1PO'd **.

No chance that a couple of your mates grabbed it as a joke?

Anyway, pencils on the way to you.

They were full when they came from de nederlands.

I'm not sure would have to take it apart to tell, but I'm guessing they are empty now. Waste not want not.

I took the pictures in a hurry last night, so they aren't that great, but did you notice the animals on the back of the packs?View Image
