We’ve got a typical basement for a 1920’s bungalow in the city. We want to finish it off for casual living/project space (it seems dry, although we’ve only had it 6 months). The ceiling height to the bottom of the 1st floor joists is 7’2″ and the layout is fairly open. But as you can guess, there are many obstructions and obstacles in the ceiling that would make a sheet rock or suspended ceiling awkward and in places, barely over 6′. We were wondering about simply painting everything (including duct work, natural gas lines, electrical wiring, etc) white or a very light color but were worries about unforeseen effects on these non-wood surfaces. Is there something to worry about here? Any experiences with similar situations? Primers? Kinds of paint?
