How can I find a CNC shop?

jptort | Posted in General Discussion on April 19, 2006 06:32am

I’d like to start getting cabinet boxes made by a CNC shop, but have not had success in locating one. Without breaking the advertising rule, is there a particular set of word that will make Google tell me where they are or is there a general industry site with many shops listed?  Thanks.

"I'd start my seach in China. They've bought all our machinery."They have bought our president too. Many of the Chinese are coming here to teach our students. Very few teachers at the university are Americans. Very few in any of the doctoral programs are Americans.

    http://www.woodworkingcanada.com/

This is a site to a Canadian trade (advertising) paper. In the search box at the bottom type in "components" then down to "custom wood". There are a lot of US companies in with the Canadian ones, if that makes any difference to you. You can also search for doors, drawers, stairs and a lot of tools too.

There is probably some equivalent sites in the US but you'll have to find them yourself.

Let me know if it helped.

Try http://www.woodweb.com  ......they have a CNC forum you can post on, people do that all the time. It can also lead you to other shops. Or, the manufacturers of the machines will direct you to shops in your area that have their machines....for cabinets, try Thermwood, Komo, Busellato, etc.

I get a free magasine called Cabinetmaker. There are alot of ads for boxes, doors and drawers. Cabinetmaker features small shops and does alot of articles on CNC shops.

    1. TomT226 | Apr 19, 2006 08:01pm | #7

Computer Numerically Controlled.  Thought of some others...but I'd get a "time out."

Try FDM (Furniture Design) magazine. It is a pretty good trade magazine for the furniture and cabinetry industries. You might want to try using the keywords: panel cutting machines, or point-to-point machines, or panel saws. I work for a trade show exhibit manufacturer in the Philadelphia area and I do the CNC programs for our CNC machine. We use a machine made by KOMO (out of Sauk Rapids Minnesota) you might also want to give them a call and they might be able to direct you-they're good people. Also Onsrud is another company that makes the router bits for these sophisticated machines and they might also be able to help you. Those two companies are on the Internet.

A couple of ways to search...

Call the large sheet goods suppliers, the guys who sell units of melamine and MDF and veneer panels and don't even know what a 2x4 is. Ask them who they sell to that will make parts for you.

Call the vendors of things like doors, drawers, and hardware. Ask the same question.

Or, call the machinery dealers that sell the big stuff, CNC machining centers, beam saws, edgebanders. There may only be one or two per state or region, depending on where you are.

When I started outsourcing parts it was an major improvement. I had a typical small woodshop, Unisaw with outfeed table, that kind of equipment. You cannot comfortably make cabinets week in and week out on that kind of stuff. Once I found a couple of good suppliers I never bought a whole sheet of anything again.

Both Cab Parts and Scherr's use CNC to make their KD cabs.

    http://www.ecabinetsystems.com/

Here’s a site that offers free cabinetmaking software and also puts you in touch with people/companies that run their cnc systems.

The software is state of the art and very good, but the learning curve is steep. You can design your cabs and have these other co-op members make the parts. Or you can design the cabs and make them yourself; your choice.

They also keep trying to make the software more user friendly with new versions and they are having some success with this. I was on board since v2 which I couldn’t do anything with and was about to give up, but now they’re up to v4 and I can finally design and make my own cut lists and price lists which is a very usefull feature. Check it out, like I said it’s free so you’ll only be out your time.

    Dan
