Fellow Hammer and Nail Grunts,
I have two quick questions regarding wood baseboard attached to steel studs. I am installing an unusual baseboard in an office space. Some of these areas (60 board feet of 320 total board feet) have inside and outside radiuses. All but two radiuses are easy to bend the wood around. The other two areas are quite tight (approximately a 3 foot radius, give or take).
First question: I have some thoughts on how to bend this material but I need to make sure if I am right. I plan on curf cutting the base to a point right below the top reveal of the base. This way I can soak the material and gradually bend it. Is this the way to bend it properly? Also, The GC told me he would get me a steamer. How good are these things [steamers] and does it work with the wood already wet and partially bent? I have never used one.
Second question: I plan on attaching this base using 3 types of fasteners. I plan on liquid nailing the base to the walls and use square head trim screws in the bottom plate (I have to install a quarter round after the base. It is a concrete floor with marble tiles laid on top. Yes, I plan to scribe the base and yes, the architect wants quarter too … go figure!) and cris-cross nails in the top into the studs. I know that the nails will not hold the base alone, but I figure it will hold until the liquid nails is dry. Is this a practical plan, or is there a better way?
Side note on the curves: I have to stain the base so I can not curf cut all the way through nor can I stack laminate. That would be WAY too easy!
Teach me something guys, I’m ready to learn!
Thanks in advance,
Splinky
