how to attach roofing felt under a steel roof?
Hi folks,
I tried searching for this but now I’ll just ask: I’m putting up a metal roof; vertical seam, 26 ga and am wondering how best to attach the underlying roofing felt. In the past I’ve always used the 1″ plastic caps but that was with asphalt shingles. This is my first metal roof. I’m wondering if the protrusion of the plastic cap is enough to telegraph through the metal roofing since it’s pretty thin. Many of you must have done this, I’d appreciate your opinions.
thanks,

Roofing nails. You don't need too many because once the metal is fastened it won't go any where.
I should have mentioned...
that this project is a little cabin up in the mountains that my wife (she loves her nail gun) and I are putting up. So we're only able to get up there on weekends, and most likely the tar paper will go down one weekend, the steel the next. So in addition to just fastening the tar paper without showing through the steel, it has to not blow away. I was considering taping the seams with 3M magic flashing tape, if that stuff works as advertised it should prevent the wind from being able to grab anything. Thoughts?
Cover the entire roof with a self adhering underlayment made for metal roofs. You'll never have to worry about when you roof or future leaks.
On thinner gauge metal everything with telegraph through, but if it takes plastic caps to keep the stuff from blowing off the roof then it's a no-brainer to use plastic caps. Just don't double stack caps and I bet you'd never notice it.
