Chimney is 40 yrs old, and solid but ugly. The cinderblock is decaying and doesn’t hold paint for a darn. I was thinking of nailing on some metal mesh and skip trowelling some plaster or something.
Some of the blocks, about 5 or 10, have this decorative diamond thing pushing out a bit that I guess I’d have to chisel flat before any beautification could proceed.
We’re gonna make the downstairs apartment a month-by-month furnished rental and the tenants have to walk past this on the way in and out. I’d like it to look nice.
First picture shows the bump-out decorative block. Second one shows the general deterioration.

Expanded metal lath and stick on rock could maybe look good.

I don't know how anybody could give you any good ideas based on those shots - got any from further back? Nice to see the whole building that the chimney belongs to.
