I would like to build windows vs. purchasing for my workshop. I am assuming I can build 6 decent windows (approx. 4′ long x 3′ high) cheaper than I can buy them. I have built a couple of smaller windows in the past and they worked fine..using double pane glass and a splined frame…I am looking for better construction ideas but can’t find anything on the web or in these threads..any ideas, books or info would be appreciated.

I'm pretty sure there's a Taunton book out there (it's in my library--it's a pretty opld book, butstill good) called "Fine Homebuilding on Windows and Doors" and it talks about homemade windows. I don't have any other ideas.
I will hunt that book up...thanks

Your welcome--Taunton may even have it on this website on their home page--I didn't look. Like I said, it is pretty old. Oh, you could also look up articles from Fine Homebuilding magazine and proabably find stuff there--as that's all the book is--a compilation of mag articles.
I built the windows for my shop about 6 years ago. Mine are 6 lites over 6 and double hung. I built 11 all told, the two in the loft are hinged, not double hung. I agree there is not much on the web to help build windows. If possible, find an old sash and study how the sash was made. You can get the cope and rail window bits from whiteside. The mullions are a bit tricky, you need a careful setup with a router table to do these accurately.Look at the details on major window manufactures,Pella ,anderson etc. Each double hung window cost me $60.00. This included everything including hardware ,sash ,glass and the jambs.
