Hobus-
I have embarked on the same project. I have most of the basement dug out and am very near complete with building my first wall. I’m working in mostly sand also, except I have about 2 feet of clay on the top so the soil under the house stays fairly vertical. However, torential rains this weekend were not good to my excavation outside (they were a little steeper than 1:1).
The 1 foot (min.) horizontal to 1 foot vertical is a pretty good rule for staying away from your footings. So, if you’re digging down an additional 4 feet, stay at least 4 feet away from your footing. And though I’m not an official member of the Gabe Fan Club (I haven’t paid my dues yet), he gives good advice regarding the geotech.
If you want to know more about my project, let me know.
Best regards,
Jim

I am trying to dig out an existing basement by hand. The ground is all sand and keeps sluffing in. I am concerned for the stability of my foundation. Can anyone give me any hints of how to dig it out?
Thanks
*Dear Hobus,Sand may be easy digging but isn't stable enough for digging around foundations, piers, columns footings etc.Have someone experienced with your local soil conditions look at it for an opinion.I don't think it's your intent to undermine your house's foundation and cause a section to collapse.Gabe
