How to finish exterior trim nail holes?
I am going to either use two-coats of solid stain or a coat of primer and a coat of paint on my exterior poplar trim. Either way, I am going to coat all sides and ends, so I plan to perform the painting/staining on pieces that have been cut to fit before installing them. Once the trim is nailed in place (with either double hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel nails) I don’t know how to finish the nail holes. I’m assuming some sort of caulk or putty and then paint/stain over it. Anyone have suggestions? Thanks.

set the nails flush, and because you used chekered head nails dab em with the finish of choice.

I know a bunch of painters that use DAP...
always seems to work well...

I use a wood filler, sand after 15 minutes and then prime.

DAP glazing compound for the painted areas and colored DAP glazing compound for the stained parts. If you can't find the colored stuff you can make your own by adding various "universal colorants" to a small wad of the white glazing compound.
Ask your paint supplier for a small shot of red oxide, raw umber, lamp black, yellow oxide, and burnt umber colorants. I use baby food or similar small jars, and the colorant is ussually no more than a few bucks for all colors. Kneed the colorant into the glazing compound and add others as needed to match your stain. Use more small jars to store your custom colored putty. BTW the new stuff will be a little sticky and looser than straight glazing compound. I also reccomend rubber gloves while mixing, or you'll end up with stained hands.
