I’ll be plumbing bath drains over my kitchen and want to know the best way to insulate the noise from the PVC drains pipes.
Is there a commercially available product for this?
The present cast iron drains let no sound through but will probably be replaced because of required re-routing. I’m leaning away from no-hub because of size – I need to make a couple turns with less clearance than the current pipes.

There is not a good way to acoustically insulate plastic drain pipe. Acoustical panel underneath (ugly), acoustical foam, and concrete backer board inside the bay all would help a bit. The most successful way to quiet down plastic drain pipes is to use cast iron instead. If you don't have quite enough room in the twisty part, use plastic where you have to and transition to cast iron for as much of the run as possible. It will be quieter than all plastic. You'll probably be happier in the future if you go to the extra effort now (more/different framing?) in order to use cast iron. -David
*Chris,PVC=Noise. If you like the sound of 1.6 gals streaming down a 4" pipe while you're making/eating dinner, you'll love PVC. Its especially nice in the morning when someone is taking a shower.It just real noisy. So you have three options, assuming you want to minimize sound:1. PVC/Cast Iron Combo. You can plumb the twists with PVC, but why can't you plumb the verticles in cast iron?2. PVC with Sound Abatement. Fill the Cavity with Rock Wool or foam. Make sure there is a dead air space. Over the dry wall (use at least 5/8"), add some firing strips, and add a dead air space and a second sheet of dry wall.3. Re-frame Chase. Personally, I'd at least look at the possibility of re-framing the chase either in a corner, on a wall or through a cabinet to accomodate cast iron. It's just a better product.
