Doing a little remodeling and will be insulating the wall where the stack runs to the 2nd floor. This wall is therefore 2+ studs thick (2×4 construction) to accomodate the width of the stack.
Part of this wall runs out to our screen porch and is therefore exposed to the weather (Don’t worry, the stack itself is within the main body of the house…otherwise…things could get messy View Image )
Question is this….where the wall runs out to the screen porch and is therefore exposed to the elements (well, it is under the sheathing and the siding) what’s the proper way to insulate it??
My thought was to rip the kraft paper off one layer of insulation and put this right up against the exterior wall between the outside studs and then put another layer with the kraft paper and staple the paper flanges to the inside studs.
I seem to recall that the rule is you always want the paper to be nearest the living space.
so my sequence would be (from the outside in)
1) Siding
2) Tyvek
3) Sheathing
4) layer of insulation without the paper
5) layer of insulation with the paper (stapled to the studs closest to the living space)
6) Sheetrock.
Does this make sense??

Instead of fg, I'd look into acoustical batts. They're rated for fire seperation in commercial use. I've seen fg burn when tossed onto a fire. Not the glass itself, I think, but the binding resins. You won't find acoustic batts at the big boxes. You'll have to go to an insulation supply house.

How cold outside?
I would use a sheet of foam on the outside surface, with rips of foam on the framing on the sides but leave the inner area open, just the DW.
Foam as thick as you can fit so as to get the most R.
Leave the inside wall uninsulated so the pipe is in a room temp environment.

Folks thanks for the suggestions re: foam and foam boards, but it is only 2 stud bays that need the insulation and I have some rolls of 2x4 insulation laying around so I'll be using them.

I'd still not insulate to the inside of the pipe.
Let whatever heat goes through the DW keep the pipe from freezing.
Unless you aren't in the frozen north.
