The products are from late 60’s early 70’s. I vacuumed first. Started removal, then thought as a novice, maybe I should find out how to really do the job. I don’t want to cause health issues from this process or what I leave behind. I did a couple hours of work using a disposable vented dust respirator. Hope that’s adequate! Found the padding was stranded and sort of cotton candy like. Hard to cut with a razor knife without making a bit of a mess. Any tips or cautions would be much appreciated.

Lots of razor knife blades, dust mask, heavy twine or duct tape to keep it rolled up. Cut it into 3 or 4' wide strips the length of the room. Do the carpet and pad separately. Roll, tie or tape, and stack.
Get a carpet knife. Hardware store item. Cut 3 foot strips. Roll them up and secure with duct tape. If the padding is not too heavy just roll the whole piece and secure with duct tape.
Some carpet is very difficult to cut from the surface. Much easier to lay back three feet and cut through the backing on top of the fold. Then roll up and tape with duct tape or stranded tape. Tip: if you are on the upper floors, open window and carefully drop out of window. Try to avoid carrying old carpet through the house.
Once I get all the carpet out of a room I like getting all the tackless up. I lay it all down neatly on the padding and cut the padding the same as the carpet and wrap it up. It helps to fold/tape the ends so the small pieces don’t fall out.
