We are about to strip the slate roofing off one side of a 2-story house. We won’t be reinstalling them on this project but would prefer to recycle them if possible. We will have full staging set up about 3′ below the eave. Any tips for efficient but careful stripping?

Ask slateman
It's a long of a commute, even for him.
Oh, you mean for advice. I hope he checks in. ;-)

It's all small letters though .
People around here who can't remember my name say he's the slateman , so with e mail addresses theres no space between .
No harm , just clarifying
Mike,
If you have a slaters ripper , pull 4 or 5 slates from 3 courses every 8' so you can put in roof jacks . Do this every 5' up the roof until you can reach the ridge comfortably .
Once you've removed the ridge metal or cap slates you can use a flat bar to pull each course off the old sheathing , pulling all the old nails as you go .Dry the roof in as you work down the roof .
Work the slate piles down the roof stagings until you can set them onto the shingle hoist to lower to the ground .
If we could co- ordinate it well I'd come down with my hoist and be the lead man for a day .
Look up " harvesting slate " from a month ago in the photo gallery .
Let me know if you want help for a day .

Walter,
That makes sense, remove just enough to get you to the top, then strip from the top down. I doubt our guys have slate rippers but I think they have shingle theifs, which I imagine would work for this small a scale.
We don't have a shingle hoist, so getting the good ones to the ground intact will be a challenge. I'll email you tomorrow after I talk with my boss. We should be ready in 2-3 weeks. I'd love a second chance to buy you lunch!
The thread you linked to helps fill in the blanks. Thank you--
Mike ,
Are you adding dormers to this side or is it just a reshingling venture .
A yard arm and bull wheel with a 1" rope will work too , but the RG is hard to beat when you're old like me !!
Keep me posted . I could visit Timberwolf Tools while I'm there !
Walter
Just reshingling. We tried to get them to go for slate on the whole house, but no go. This is the last 7sq or so of a 50-60 sq roof, and the only part that's still slate.
Mike ,
Heres the link.
