See attached pic. I’m asking about the wood – not the brick. The ones I’m doing may not have the concrete toppers, but rather a simple brick header course (or rowlock) with a reveal. The brick columns will be 16″ x 16″ and with the reveal will be about 17″x17″. The wood columns will be about 12″ at the base and 6″ at the top.
Thanks,

4x4 structural core. MDO cut into trapezoids, with beveled edges. 2x4 blocking at the base to spread the MDO.

Thanks Ed. What thickness MDO? Also, I'm not sure I totally understand the need for the 2x4 blocking - is it attached to the 4x4? I mean I want the sleve to float around the 4x4 - right...
Matt
I've done these. The 2x4 is a "booster ring" for the bottom, a four-sided spacer, because the column box has so much taper. Your MDO ply will be 3/4" material.
Here's a rough idea ...Whenever you are asked if you can do a job, tell'em "Certainly, I can!" Then get busy and find out how to do it. T. Roosevelt
Thanks all. I've got it now...

Like Ed said but I like to run the edge on my router table using my lock-mitre bit, a bit of overkill maybe. I used MED X board on these in the photo and a concrete board for the fields.
I've done many like yours the old way, just a pine panel. Just prime the interior and edges.

I remember you posting those pics before. They look good.
What is MED X board?
ThanksMatt
It's an exterior grade of MDF. The 5" base on the bottom of those columns, there are three, are swelling a little. I fear I might have mixed some MDF in with the MED X by mistake.

You'll have better luck buying it if you ask for MEDEX instead of MED X
