Hello All, My house is 5 years old and is plumbed with copper. It has developed this problem of a very loud humming noise any time we run a faucet or flush a toilet. I have gone into the crawl space and felt the copper pipes while this noise is going and felt a very strong vibration. The original plumbing included a cut off valve in the wall of the mud room. One plumber took this out , thinking it made too sharp a turn coming up into the wall and going right back down . The noise quit for a week or two then came back just as loud. We do have a pressure reduction valve(street pressure being over 100 lbs). Could this valve have gone bad? It’s not a banging noise but a very loud hum. No valve in the house causes it any more than any other. Anybody got any ideas? All input appreciated. Danny Gray

OK, gotta say it before someone else does: The pipes hum because they don't know the words.
I would guess that the problem is the pressure reducing valve, but rather than replacing the valve it would probably work to just install a hammer arrestor or expansion tank directly adjacent to the valve (on the house side).
Or, for a quick fix, just adjust the valve ever so slightly one direction or the other. That might do it, at least temporarily.
DanH, You're a genius! I turned yhe adjusting screw about 1/4 turn and the pipes are quiet. It's been about a week now and nothing. How could you know this? Please explain. Thanks a million. Danny G.
