I’ve got a new house with 24 Hurd Double Hungs and 1 slider door that leak through their frames. It was first noticed on a windy rainy day. Water was sitting on top of the sills, on top of the tyvek. After further investigation with a squirt bottle, I discovered that water can penetrate the aluminum frame of the window in the corners, where there is a gasket sealing the frame pieces together. I can make the ones with badly placed gaskets leak. The same goes for the door. Hurd mailed me 2 tubes of caulk, (which they said was very expensive) after I complained. After my most recent complaint, they sent me some literature on storm windows. I could not believe what I was seeing. Has anyone ever heard of such a problem? Ever had any experience with Hurd trying to get out of their warranty? Any feedback is appreciated.

T Scot, it sounds like you discovered the truth about one of the nationally advertised window manufacturers. I've never been one to trust the hype and firmly believe that some of the cheapest generics are as good as the "brand names".
The choice of double hungs is often not a good choice. They are cheaper, but often, you get what you pay for. There are many times that we have a hard time getting those things into the rough openings before they fall apart. The entire "system" of plastic liners and such make me skeptical about their overall performance.

*I have discovered the truth alright, Hurd Millwork has no shame. Sending me storm window literature in response to what anyone would plainly see as a defect? It's almost as if they're mocking me from atop their ivory tower.Has anyone ever even heard of putting storms over a new modern window? I'm not in an area very susceptible to horizontal rain.
*t...I would think they have a rep that will visit your home....If not, that would suck big time.... I installed them in a few Lincoln Log Homes and found no problems...Sometimes it's not the window but the user, or installer or maybe you are expecting them to do something no window does....Though, I have never lived where wind is a problem due to trees always surrounding my homes...near the stream in the woods,aj
*I don't know about their double hung windows, but I have three hurd swinging patio doors which have severe leaks thru the sill. The wood side jambs rotted out after 7yrs. Hurd would not pay for all of the cost to replace the doors nor would they pay for the interior water damage to my home. On top of this the heat mirror shield failed after three years. Hurd rep. never came out. They just sent a local person they use for window replacements to look at my situation.
*Thats what my distributor keeps telling me - that they have a hired gun who goes and investigates their warranty problems. So far, they keep telling me he's coming but nothing has happened yet, and it's been several months.I originally thought the sliding door was leaking through the frame, but I've since discovered that it is acually leaking between the glass and the aluminum/wood frame, where there is a gap that apparently was inadequately sealed at the factory. I realize that had it been factory caulked, I would have no beef with these people, but I did not pay $10k for an after the fact fix. Did you sue them? Take them to Small Claims court?
*tscott. We had several of our Hurd Heat Mirror casement windowns fail. Hurd was prompt in shipping us replacement windows. Whatever the problem they fully cooperated with us. GeneL.

I have had 8 of my Hurd windows tint film fail inside of the windows on my house, all on the south side. I contacted the company and did not get what I felt was a satisfactory response from them???
