We have an older home and are consisdering a remodeling project. When we get into this project, it might be a good time to have an audit done with respect to the present HVAC system (electric with Wilkening wood burning fireplace) and explore the latest technologies. Are there independent companies that you can recommend that come in an evaluate your home, analize present systems, and provide recommendations as to what chanages that would provide the most benefit with respect to costs and return on investment? Given the square footage, insulation, different types of HVAC units on the market, I find this quite a challenge to determine what is best. Can you please provide some guidance? Any help in pointing us in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
Frank

I'd suggest that you check with your local electric company. Many have a deal where they will subsidize a home energy audit. This is probably not as detailed as you'd like, but the price is usually quite reasonable.
HVAC Audit / Recommendations

In addition to that
check the BPI and RESNET sites to see if there are energy auditors in your immediate area.
Thanks for the info on BPI and RESNET. Although I'm not familiar with either of these, I will check them out very soon.
Thanks and stay cool in this heat!

Keep in mind that there are nitwits in every field, including the ones that come recommended by utility companies. I find it best to consult several sources and I especially ask my friends and neighbors for their experiences. Just because someone's an energy auditor that doesn't make him an energy expert.
Your observations with respect to auditor / expert if very true. I've found this especially true in other fields as well. Lots of experts but very few who can deliver true expetise with genuine craftsmenship.
Thanks for your input and try to stay cool in this heat!
