I am working on a project in NY metro, 2,000sf cape- 1,000 each floor. Five years ago owners put in 120 BTU furnace, forced hot air and 3 1/2 ton condenser. I’d like to utilize the current system to heat and cool upstairs.
My dilema is choosing the best way to install duct work on 2nd floor. Interior walls do not line up. Heating contractors have tried to sell them a separate unit for upstairs, but there’s no attic space to house it and owners do not want to incurr expense. They want to work with system in place- they had purchased an oversized unit in anticipation of this expansion.
Option 1: Follow current duct flow from first floor to exterior wall, but maybe too many elbows?
Option 2: Run up exterior walls to basement trunk?
Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

You might look into a different direction.
Split ductless system.
Thanks Bill.
That was an option, but that would mean one for each of the 3 bedrooms upstairs- too costly. Unless I'm overlooking something. Thanks.

Some units allow for multiple indoor units off of one outdoor compressor. I think that I have seen 3 or 5.
But I have not idea how they work.
