Planning a project–daylight basement in a house to be used as bedrooms/ baths/ and a living room. I’ve done all my homework, and will make this basement as watertight as humanly possible, giving much attention to footing drains and the like.
Project is in San Diego County, CA–relatively dry climate, low watertable, and the house is near the top of a hill, so we shouldn’t have much of a problem with water getting into the basement.
HOWEVER, Murphy being the guy he is, I would like to install the flooring in such a way that JUST IN CASE there is any moisture, it won’t make the basement smell or the flooring swell.
The plans call for the whole range of flooring–hardwood in the living room, tile in the baths, and carpet in the bedrooms. What do you suggest for underlayment of any kind?
I was thinking of running 1″ CCA sleepers bedded in tar, poly, and then 3/4 BCX under flooring. Is this overkill? Underkill?? Your thoughts/ suggestions/ criticisms are greatly appreciated.
