I need a Granny attachment

| Posted in General Discussion on November 25, 2001 11:02am

Need to cobble up something to alert Granny that the phone is ringing & the doorbell is ringing. What kind of gizmo can I make to flash a light when the phone rings, and another for the door? Something with a low wattage red bulb for one & a different color for the other bell. Probably will have to be located in the bedroom area & another set in the kitchen/living area.

Something like a wall lamp activated by what? Something simple, Radio Shack type stuff? No nuclear reactor control parts. Joe H

Joe the doorbell is easy because the transformer is standard and you local radio shack will have all the parts to rig a light to the buzzer.

But the phone can be harder because it depends on the type and model that you have.

For the phone I would contact your bell service provider and tell them your situation. Here, Bell will provide special phones that do have a light for hearing impared customers.

*JoeThese are all standard equipment. I have run across them from time to time. I can give you a specific site, but if you go a google search on things like "hearing impaired catalog" and "hearing impaired alarm lights".They also have them for smoke detectors and weather radios.

*Radio Shack has a couple of devices:Phone Flasher 2 ($30), andPhone Strobe Flasher($25).Go to the store, or go to Radio Shack's webpage and type "flasher" in the search box.

*Yeah, Radio Shack for the phone. I have one in my shop so I know I'm ignoring that damned thing, even with equipment running and my headphones turned up. The one I have you plug into an outlet, and into your phone jack. Then you plug the phone cord into the device, and a light into the device. The light flashes when the phone rings. Simple. Now I just need to put a "Clapper" switch on my dust collector so I don't have to go back and forth to the switch 647 times a day.

*I've seen phones with a light built in.

*I've got the same set-up as Mr. Blodgett- the radio shack I went to only had a too-small deal with the light built in- found what I was after at an electronics store. Here is one of the lights hooked up to my phone
