I am in need of a new roof, and have had several roofing contractors to my home to give me bids. 3 out of 4 contractors have given bids for a “standard 3-tab” roof as well as an upgraded “timberline” roof. Those 3 included in their bid ripping off the existing roof, laying new felt and new shingles — for both the 3-tab and timberline roof.
The 4th company said that if he did the 3-tab roof, he would rip off the existing roof, but said that he would NOT rip off the roof if he put on the timberline roof. He said there was no point and that for the timberline roof it would be better to leave the existing layer on.
I currently have 1 layer on my roof, and the city ordinance says that I can have up to 3 layers.
Questions:
* Do I need to have the existing layer ripped off before a new roof is put on — regardless of the type of new roof (3-tab or timberline)?
* Is there a design difference between 3-tab and timberline that would indicate that I should have the existing roof taken off for 3-tab but leave it on for timberline?
HELP!!!
Thanks,
Bill Eisele
