iam just getting started in construction and work for a small co. in my area. My wife is conserned that I am being taken for granted because I have some of the tools that my boss does not (chop saws, little giant ladder to name a few) . Should I expect compensation for the use of these items? Thanks for any insight you guys can give me.

Listeners write in about removing masonry chimneys and ask about blocked ridge vents, deal-breakers with fixer-uppers, and flashing ledgers that are spaced from the wall.

Consider it a trade for the experience and knowledge you are gaining, unless you have that too, then you should hire your boss. I just consider it the cost of working.
thanks for the info it will make it easier to answer her ???
Mike as a rule of thumb... employees are not supposed to supply power tools. That being said, did you volunteer your tools? If so, then it's really on you, isn't it?
My guys supply their belt and everything in it... the rest is my bag. If they prefer their own equipment to mine, they are welcome to bring it to work as long as it's safe and hasn't been modified. They never do. Not for long anyway.... maybe until something gets broken and they get to walk a mile in my shoes for a minute.
thanks for your input it helps clarify the situation for me.!
Some of my guys do bring along their own power tools (not many... but a few). They have to display to me the fact that it is compliant with safety regs... and further, it is their baby if it gets broke (although we do pay a tool allowance).
Ladders? Too many possible fines (due to poorly maintained ladders) and too many safety variables in utilizing a foreign ladder on one of my sites. I provide what is called for by reg... or something that exceeds regs. I have never had a guy offer to bring his own... but I would imagine that I would decline and tell him to put it back in his truck.
Would I pay a guy more for using his own tools? No. I provide the tools (beyond the basics)... and if the guy decides he would rather use his own.. so be it.
thank you for you help i had forgot about ladder regs!
