Ice back up spoiling a paint job
Heres a picture taken yesterday – the day after a 16″ snowfall.
Back up is coming thru the eaves and stained water and ice is ruining a paint job from last Summer.
I’ve got to take down this chimney , remove all flashings and then sheath it in and slate it.
I’ll have a chance to analyze the gutters and back up then.

wow walter you had 16" of snow and thats all thats left after a day? must be gettin close to spring!!! :)
Mike,
Thats a slate roof so a lot of it slides right off after building up a ways.
We're getting highs around freezing most days now - plus we're two hours richer on daylight.
Walter
What's up with that hip?

Theres a piece of old zinc hip cap thats blown off I'd say.
I'll be setting up to remove the chimney today so I'll get a better look.
It looks like somebody did a halfast job of re-topping that chimney once upon a time.
We got 12" out of this storm, but it was so wet and dense it was worth a good 18" or so. My right wrist and elbow and shoulder feel broken from all the shoveling. Lost power for nearly a full day to boot

They sure did !
You can tell from the bottom that it was an elegant top in the early 1900's.
They direct vented a new boiler since all the fireplaces made a stainless liner too difficult they claimed.
You had more water in your snow - ours was heavy but not wringing wet.
now that it has settled and re-froze, watch out fro floods if it rains friday. We are using the good weather today to install a skylight.

Walter- i have seen a good amount of that so far this year while out giving estimates.
One case almost as spectacular as the one you showed.
If we get the project I want to take pictures of the stains to use as a tool in explaining how much ice gaurd we install-----and how one 36" stip of icegaurd at the eaves probably won't perform adequately.

Stephen,
There's nothing like good pictures of a bad situation to help people understand the necessity of preparing for the worst case scenario.
I have lots of Shutterfly albums on most situations you can encounter with slate roofs , so then it's easy to send one out by e- mail to help show the problems that a particular client might have.
Took that chimney down today and I'll probably do the same with that sequence of pictures - put them in an album as well.
Best regards , Walter
Hey Walter.
Might want to rest those arms.
Storm coming thru Philly tonite. Think it is headed your way.
Chimney looks like a house I worked on last summer. Someone had flashing backwards between chimney and sidewall under slate and had been leaking for years.
5 slates were removed to fix it. Customer got off cheap.
I'm gonna upload some picts if I can of the barn slate/metal roof transition. Its ugly.
I don't think he'll be on that roof monday. We're supposed to get 10-14"snow tonite and monday

Me thinkith you correct.
Were slated to get 8-14 overnite thru all day. Gotta re-group and figure out my new schedule.
BTW wanna see some quality slate repairs.
Check out my picts on general discussion "slate roof transition repair" I just posted.
Jeff,
With these two items I hope to save the arms for more useful ventures.
I've looked at your thread and will be responding shortly
