Finally (not that I’ve been looking forward to it) it is cold enough to sustain ice outdoors.
And…. I’ve long had the inclination to build an ice fortress/castle/building.
So, I thought it might be fun to toss the idea around here and see what creative juices flow and which ones freeze.
I had the idea of forms on the ground… fill with water and once frozen standing up the wall panels…. but that sounds a little boring….. and at 8 pounds per gallon, HEAVY.
Maybe we CAN have a little fun with this and come up with some creative ideas, techniques, engineering, design…. etc.
Maybe one or two of us might even be so inspired as to actually put one together.

OK, I had an idea....
instead of tilt-up walls, freeze an 8" slab and cahinsaw into blocks for laying. A little water for mortar maybe.

Not a problem. Unless he ends the conversation with "huh?".PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!
Ceilings better be barrel vaults - I don't think I'd trust ice rafters or ceiling joists.
Wire lathe or hardware cloth formed into the shape you want, then spray with a hose every once in a while? I would think it would eventually get enough ice to be solid.
you know what would be real cool... to wrap that wire well with christmas lights and then coat to freeze.... leave the cord exposed and then plug the wall in. That would look cool.

Reminds me of a chldhood escapade.
Buddies and I build a snow fort, wtered it down so it had a good coating of ice.
Choose sides for a snow ball fight, that escalated into using BB guns, and the arms race was on.
Next item introduced was an .17 air pellet gun.
It was unable to penetrate the ice wall from the distance the shooter was safe from return fire at .... so he decides to "Borrow" his dad's .22 rifle
That led to a unconditional surrender on the part of those defending the fort.
Followed by one he** of a beating inflicted on that jerk.
Whoops, I guess they didn't build one every year, I just recall reading about it that often...http://www.legendsofamerica.com/CP-IcePalace.htmlhttp://www.denver-rmn.com/millennium/0525mile.shtml

That would take all of the fun out of it.... the idea is to put our creative minds together and think of some cool stuff. I know there are a lot of really good minds here for this exercise.

It's going to cost you a fortune to Air Condition the thing come summer.
The St. Paul Winter Carnival has had a number of ice castles over the years. This guy has a bunch of pictures of them on his website that may be useful for inspiration.

creativity is a nice thing Pete, but so is learning from those who have already done a thing fairly succesfully

Build a geodesic dome frame, line the inside with vapor barrier, held in place with silicone seal on the upside of the vapor barier. then spray the outside with water in a fine mist, make sure the frame will hold the weight of the ice, drill holes in the frame and run string to reinforce the ice as it forms.
Post pics!

Could try forming upsome 2x4's with a 1x3 inside, kind of like rebar. Even mak.e i joist forms.
love the story of a kid who thinks a .22 rifle is okay.
brilliant
Some inspiration!

My wife and I hope to go someday.
I think I read someplace that from the airport it's a few hours by dogsled to get there.
- must be a real issue to bring your own dogsled team on the plane!
- maybe you Great Lakes guys can advise?
