Our Woodworker’s Warehouse closed with all the others this past winter.
I didn’t like it when it happened, but I knew I’d dislike it even more in the future.
The future is here! I NEED a narrow crown stapler tomorrow. Yeah, I know….shoulda planned ahead. But the job I started yesterday fell into my lap as a referal from another contractor in the area who was too busy. Seems the project was started in January and the original contractor bailed shortly thereafter with most of the money. (He’s notorious for doing that). Took the owner until now to be able to afford to finish it. I could fit him in and he was anxious to git going.
Got kinda off track there. Back to the real story. I checked this morning and my lumber yard doesn’t have one. Went to HD this evening and remember why I hate Home Depot. After finding a parking spot I got knocked in the squash by an eager homeowner type with four 8′ PT 2X4’s on his shoulder. His wife called out to him and he spun around in the middle of a crowded aisle. I make it to the tool corral and start looking at the selection. They have 1 model displayed. It’s a PC. Not my first choice, but, hey, beggers can’t be choosers, right? I track down an orange apron to fetch me one. He takes off to “find a ladder”. Apparently my timing sucks cuz this must have coincided with his lunch break or something. Either that or “find a ladder” is home depot code for “I got better stuff to do bud”. Comes back with a ladder eventually. Before he goes up the ladder, he has to make a point of asking me to stand 10′ back. Like he’s gonna bungie jump off the top or something and doesn’t want me to get hurt. Thanks bud…..coulda really got hurt there when your smokes fall out of your pocket and re-injure that 2X4 injury from 10 minutes ago.
Doesn’t have one in stock. SHOCKER!! But he offers to see if his manager will sell me the display. (the one clearly marked, “non-working display model”)
Soooooo here I am. Missing WWW. I could go in there after work when I had time to browse and actually shop for the tools that I will have to work with daily. After working hours I don’t have a choice but the internet or HD. Lumber yards are closed, only decent tool store (45 min away) is closed, and the internet can’t give me the service I need in this type of situation (read “NOW”).
Sorry for being so long winded…..but I gotta let it out you know?

Dang, a-man with that trailer full of tools and you don't have a narrow crown stapler
lol
You sound like me wait till the last minute. That's the Story of my life.
I've seen your posts here enough so I think I could trust you and all, I could have
fed-exed my bostich narrow crown stapler(18 ga. 1/2" to 1-1/2"staples) to you as I
know I won't be needing it for a while. Then you could have mailed it back, no
problem. But I believe It's to late in the day to try anything now or is it???????
So, you don't think you could wait until Rhodefest so I could bring you my spare from Florida??
How about going to that other contractor who is too busy to take the job and see if he would have a loaner?
There ought to be SOMEONE in your area who is a regular on BT who could help you out.
Geez fellas... came to vent and left with two borrowed staplers! What a country. Pretty generous guys to be offering up your tools to a stranger. As much as I appreciate your offers, I've been meaning to buy one for a good six months now. The time has come.
The real solution is that I'll leave me house 1/2 hr earlier to make the time to get to the lumberyard on the other side of town from my jobsite. I'm 99% sure they will have the Senco in stock. Probably pay a good 20% more than I would on the net, but hey...supply and demand. By no means is it the end of the world. Hitatchi would have been my first choice, but Senco would be the close second anyway.
Just miss being able to shop for tools, hands-on, after dinner on a weeknight. I'd even make the 45min drive to the "good" tool store (Marathon Tool) if they'd stay open 'til 7 or so.
Just whining I guess!
did you try a different HD or Blowes?
wish I coulda seen the 2x4 incident... sure sounds like it sucked, but would have been damn funny to watch from a few feet away...
Blowes is being built as we speak. Next closest HD is 30min without traffic.....I was shopping around 7pm....still rush hour 'round here.
Glad you got a chuckle out of the 2X4 incident. Wanted to shove him into the Ryobi display but just shook my head and walked away. Shoving this goofball into the display....now that would have been a funny picture.
It's the assault charges that aren't so humorous anymore.
It's kinda strange really. I'm 20min oughta Boston. Tons of building going on. Lot's of wealthy suburbs. Tons of shopping centers. And very few tool stores. I get that catalog from Four Corners Hardware (Tools on Sale) once a year and drool. It would probably be very dangerous to have a tool store of that calibur in my neighborhood though.
Can you relate? ;)
me relate to that?
nawh, no way, I ain't got no problem it's everyone else...
funny though, I got a buck fifty worth of HD gift certificates, so I go in there all pumped to get a new tool... can't find jack that I want... they got types of tools I want, just not the brand or model...
so I still have 96 dollars worth of HD play money a week later... now if that would have been amazon cash, it would have been gone long ago.
What a coincidence! I am building a Loew's right now. This one is different. As a cost saving measure, they are not using a floor.
But where is your Yankee ingenuity? Why do you need a "crown staple nailer"? Can't you use brads or finishing nails or even drywall screws? Thinkoutside the box. Once upon atime I had to replace a broken toilet paper holder. It was held on with hex/slotted/Phillips head screws. I didn't have a hex nutdriver on hand and couldn't figure out how to get it off. The janitor suggested using a plain, old-fashioned straight slotted screwdriver to operate those screws.

dieselpig,
Wont help you this time, but maybe the next time...... Try checking out Sears ( is there one near you?). They may have had a crown stapler in stock. The one by me carries some bostitch stuff.

Ahhhhh yes. Never even thought of them. They probably would have been open until 9:00 or so. I guess it says alot about Craftsman these day when a carpenter needs a tool in a pinch and never even considers Sears as an option. (maybe it just says something about my awareness though!) Ended up buying the Senco at my lumberyard at 7:00 this morning. Used it for a few hours and got rained out by 11:00......go figure!
FWIW, love the Senco and not looking back.
I was going to say Sears and tell you about the great Craftsman narrow crown stapler I bought from them and use all the time, but was too afraid of the slings and arrows that would come flying my way.
So don't say anything about it and you won't have to D&C 'cause yur a Crapsman addict. Suffer in soilence..
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming.... WOW!!! What a Ride!
Nah, I get what works and if it happens to be a Craftsman,...well that's what's important. You're only proving my point.
Hey dieselpig,
I love these stories. I came from the land of Home Depot (Phoenix, Az) and am now in northern N.E. I'm faithful to a fault to my local lumber yards and hardware stores. HD is moving close and many of my customers (or should I say former) go there, but not me I'm holding the line. Anyway my local hardware store down on Main Street sells new and reconditioned Porter Cable and Bosch tool with the same warranty. In 2 years I've bought all my finish nailers and compressor from them. Are they open till 10pm every night...heck no....but they are there when it counts.
Anyway good luck with your project and as much as possible stay LOCAL.

I used to go to the Woodworkers Warehouse in Yorktown,N.Y. I pulled up one day and found out they were closed by the note that was posted on the door. Luckily I've got a few other contractor and tool supply places around here. As for WWW closing what's up with that, anyway!
