Hi,
Thought I would introduce myself. First, I’m living on the northleft coast (worm land), but I grew up in Sidewinder City, NH. I am currently working as an asst. superintendant in a 100 home sub-division. I’ve done a wide variety of construction work: heavy equipment operation, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, concrete work, siding, cabinet making, welding/metal fabrication, mechanic–I even worked in a ship yard for a year or two. Yuk!! I’m better in some areas than others, but enjoy learning about a lot of things.
I’m in an interesting position now as I am moving away from the trades and more into management. I began my current position about six weeks ago and am just now feeling like I have a clue of what is going on. We have 25 to 30 houses going at one time with a couple of punch carpenters, a few laborers, the super and myself. Every thing else is done by subs. We are cranking these houses out in 2-3 months and it’s a zoo. Scheduling is a nightmare as there are so many variables. Our labor force is not large enough to keep up the pace we are moving, yet management says not to hire anyone else… The bottom line is always money. I’d love to hear from some of you what it is like to be a sub in a situation like this.
On more of a personal note, I’m married with three great kids (7, 10, 13) living in a 50 year old fixer upper that we have been fixing up for many years. How do you work on a house and go to all the kid’s soccer, basketball and baseball games? Answer: you don’t. My poor wife.
I’ve been eavesdropping on this forum for awhile (tell me that’s not voyeurism…) and enjoy the humor and passion many of you express. Also, I enjoy the incredible wealth of information and experience this forum represents.
That’s it for now. CC

CC, 20 years from now you won't care about this house, but you're gonna regret all the kids events you missed.
The house will still be there but your kids won't be.

CC,
Your time spent lurking has already paid off. Gunner's pic didn't throw you in the least!
Welcome to Breaktime!
There is one interesting phenomenon about Breaktime that you have not yet picked up on. Despite the fact that people frequently criticize a questioner for not giving enough info, there is a thin line between too little and too much.
If you ask more than one question, it is likely that only one question will be answered!
I have extremely limited experience working as a sub and it was not in the environment that you describe. If no one responds to that part of your post, feel free to start another thread with a more narrow focus.

Another day, another tool.
Welcome, CC!
Newbies always have to buy a round. Since you're in the northleft, I'll take a Grant's Scottish Ale. Thanks!
Language is my second language.
On all of the new construction I've worked on, Management (supers and assistants) start at 7:00am to 4:30 or 5:00pm mon-fri. They are not available outside of these hours and do not give their home numbers. There is usually an emergency office number, which means there is someone on call for major emergencies (floods, plagues, pestilence, fire...) Calls outside of these boundaries (like lost keys or where does the_____go? will be greeted with a hearty FU.
All trades can operate with the information they receive within those hours.
Negotiate a reasonable salary
Enjoy your family...
Beyond that, you have the enviable position of getting paid to learn everything you need to build houses on your own. Of which trade stroking and scheduling is paramount....
