I have a very good client. She has given me 4 remodel jobs and recommended me for many others. And, I got the jobs so I want to help if I can. She has shown me about five places when there are small spaces in mortar or bricks where from time to time a granular material appears. She cleans it up and then it is back in a week or so.
I suggested she call an exterminator. She did and he said he had no idea what it was but he would tent the house and that would kill whatever it is. I don’t have any contacts at the insect firms in the area.
What can I suggest. Any ideas as to her next steps?

Wasthe exterminator an entomloigist(think that's the right term)? I suspect not. They (entomloigist) usually aren't the quys who come out.
Have a sample of the granular material brought to an entomoligist, pest control firms often have one on staff. They should be able to identify it. What about county Agriculter office, maybe they can help.
