I’ve seen references in the home-owner magazines (Family Handyman and so on) to inside plastic storm “windows” that you install by fastening some sort of track around the casing, then snapping plastic in place (and, if I recall correctly, shrinking it with a blow-dryer). We live on the north coast of California, where we pretend it doesn’t get cold (relative to my few years in Minnesota and balmy Michigan, it doesn’t; but 20 degrees is still below freezing), so I haven’t been able to find these in the local stores.
Two questions: a) anyone have any experience with these, and b) anyone know of a mail order source?
I’m a little concerned that we’ll wind up trapping condensation inside the existing single-pane windows and inducing rot. While we may not do cold as well as Minnesota, we get lots of rain, and can do damp at world-class levels.
