Installing castiron sinks

| Posted in General Discussion on October 2, 2004 11:44am

I could use a little help here.  My friend is installing a castiron sink in his remodled kitchen and is finding that the sink rocks on two corners.  I’ve told him to check the counter for level and if there is a twist or warp in it.  I’ve also asked him to determine if the sink itself has a warp to it.  He says the counter is fine, though the sink has a warp.  Can castiron sinks be warped?  Can he do anything to fix the fit?  Should I have him check the counter top more closely?  Should he just take the sink back and exchange it for a new one?  Thanks for any handy tips.

I can't say that I've ever had a CI sink I couldn't work with.  I've had some air under the edge upon setting, but never a rock.   If I had a problem I would ask the supplier to bring me out a swap, or I would make the original work.  Those things are too damn heavy to be carting around.  The lack of glaze on the edge aggravates me more.

Thanks for the advice Calvin.  I'm thinking along the lines you are.  I've never seen one rock either.  Gaps around the edges, yes, sitting on two corners, no.  I'm thinking of swapping and if that still doesn't work, making it fit.

For once, I agree with Cal<G>...

If it's a new sink, and the deck is flat, there shoudn't be a problem...

have the supplier bring a new one, or get a cheap stainless one you can warp to fit<G> Don't worry, we can fix that later!

OK, think outside of the box..........somethings off.........not unlikely it is the sink.

What are we talking about?? An 1/8, a little more?? Seen it plenty of times.

More than that ?? Take it back.

    Shim it and caulk.

Find the high point(s) and grind them down. Done.

Inside the box, you could take it back and get another rocker.

"Can castiron sinks be warped? "

Yes. I see lots of it. Not that you should accept it. Just have them keep on sending replacements till the fit is right ...

forget which brand it was ... but worked on a remodel a coula years ago where I swear we went thru 5 or 6 till we got one that wasn't warped ...

really wish I could remember whoch brand now ... the plumber wasn't surprised at all ... said he was getting about 8 out of 10 from them too warped to use.

I was subbing the trim ... if I was calling the company every week for 2 months I'm sure I'd have a clearer idea of who it was ... don't wanna guess and give the bad rap to the wrong company.

How bout calling that plumber? Sounds like 8 out of 10 pieces of crap might be good enough to share...actually sounds like it oughta be shared. I know I'd appreciate the brand name. Haven't ever seen you be shy before<G> Don't worry, we can fix that later!

how much you wanna bet that guy's supplier just kept sending over the same two sinks until his customer stopped complaining.

"That 6th one you sent me fit perfectly", say's your plumber friend.

      ("snicker"), thinks his crafty supplier.

I would use a long (4') straightedge to be certain that ther is no problem with the counter top.  If it is level, take the sink back and get a new one.

You have a high corner or two, shim it or grind it.................

I'm not talking brain surgery here..........look under the high corners, you might find what you are looking for.

Or make multiple trips to the stupid box and get another one.

If all you bought is one sink, I doubt any supplier is gonna start a special run for your sink. This seems to be an inherent problem with the CI.. I can't say that it is isolated to a brand or a price point, but it seems to happen alot.
