New construction using Fiber Cement siding painted with a greenish color ( had to design my own color because surprising out of 1k + colors to choose from my wife couldn’t find one she liked so i can’t give a name of it so I just call it DW Green ). Anyways, after getting a few painted pieces up to get a feel for the look I start planning for the trim color and what material to use for trim i.e. pvc, fiber cement. I am using a few other things that will be utilizing cedar and thought about it for a while and came up with using cedar around the doors and windows also. Seeing as i won’t be using j-channels around them I would router a notch out around the trim of the bottom piece that would fit over the siding to cover up the nail holes.
Looking for feedback on any negatives on doing this, should i stain and use a spar urethane, just stain and no spar urethane or any other comments appreciated.

we use either Miratech or Azek for our trim when we do fibercement, we use only 5/4 so it will be pround of the siding....
the trim should have a decay resistance and affinity for paint similare to the siding
i really dislike rabbetting the trim to receive the siding..... then what do you do , caulk all of the resulting voids ?.... butt the siding to the trim , it's worked well for 400 years in New England

Prime and paint or use solid color stain. Sucks to cover it up, but it will last a lot longer.
