Am preparing to install 3 15′ beams measuring 6″ x 3″ or so as false beams in ceiling. Contractor has recommeded cutting out a groove 3.5″ in top of beam facing ceiling. A 2×4 would be nailed to ceiling joists and the beam would be nailed onto the 2×4 with finish nails from side. This would avoid alternative of drilling out holes in face of beam and securing with lags from underneath directly to ceiling joists and then plugging holes. Has anyone used this method before?
Thanks,
Adam

Yes. Though I would use several layers of ripped plywood (which is much straighter than 2x4's), which would be glued and screwed to the ceiling as opposed to nailed.

Jim , if you were to snap a chalk line on the ceiling and then fasten short pieces of 2x4, you can avoid the warp problem.
Do it right, or do it twice.
Elcid,
That's true. But plywood is already straight in 8' lengths, doesn't require as long a screw to reach the joists, has no wane edges, and is much easier to come by in the trim stages.

or even just snap a line and simply bend the 2x straight?
Like everytime we set a wall ... build wood bulkheads ... ledgers for built-ins .....
Very easy ...
I'd leave the drywall ... and glue and screw to the joists thru it.

We will have "peeled logs" added to the ceiling of the living room, to add a SW look but not bearing and they tell me they will have metal plates there to hang from.
That may be a possible solution for you also?

"are those real?????"
can you cut out the drywall where each beam ends and add some cats for the beams to rest on notching where the plates are?

In my DR, I screwed/glued 2x4 sleepers up first(conviently covering up the new ceiling DW joints-I hate taping over my head), and then boxed them in w 1x pine.
1x(your choice) for the sides and 1x4 for the bottom w/ about a 1/4" inside reveal. It was a PITA to trim the ends, but we're really happy with the results.
