I am planning to replace my kitchen/dining room floor with linoleum (marmoleum). The current floor is ceramic tile. Under the tile is 3/4″ ply and then the homes original 3/4″ hardwood (nailed directly to joists). I mentioned that I was going to rip up the ceramic and the rep at the Marmoleum dealer said to just use levelling compound on the ceramic and lay the new floor on top.
Are floors like roofs . . . there are only so many layers you can or should put on before completely removing all the layers? (FYI, the joists are 2X8 Fir with 12′ spans to the “center beam”). Will I have problems down the road with the linoleum with levelling over the tile?

it would all depend on how well the tile is adhered, and how good a leveling job you do...
are you using the click lock Marmoleum, or the glue down?
I'd be using the glue-down squares. I am compitent with leveling, though I've never done it over ceramic tile.Jason
This is the type of stuation where I begin issuing stepladders to climb over the thresholds.
Why not do it correctly (the right way) and rip it down to the subfloor and work your way up with a sensible approach.
Just a 'little' pet peeve of mine.

It's Never Too Late To Become What You Might Have Been
I'm with eric, I just ripped out three thats THREE tile floors layed down in an old apt, building, granted the joist are about 5x12 but two now have to be supported with steel then scabbed to get them to level again! I hate cleaning out other carpenters SHHHut-yo-mouth! Get in the habit of doing your own dirty work. You will be more proud of the fresh, LOW result.
No its NOT a split level home, I just put in a new floor!
Thanks for the advice. My initial plan was to rip out the ceramic, but when I mentioned it to the marmoleum rep, he looked at me like I had two heads. Thanks - Jason
Does the Marmoleum rep live in your house? If not, I'd ignore their opinion and rip the stuff out. If they don't have long term experience with what happens in those situations, I'd take their advice with a large grain of salt.Which, BTW, is the spring project at my house too. Though I think I may stick with the hardwood that I think is down there.
Sounds like a lot of dead load for 2x8 joists.....
Dude
I am in the same spot. i have ceramic floorig and I plan to put in hardwood. I thought about ripping up the tile but after thinking about it that would be anightmare.
I have done alot of flooring work on my own and I am going to go right over the ceramic tile. I am going to put down a layer of cork first for soundproofing. After that glue right to the flooring. The comment about being level is correct, but its more of a problem when you are putting in limestone tile or other tile becasue if its not perfect when you walk on it it will crack. When ceramic tile are laid right they are ampost perfect and become another floor. It really does depend on how well they are adhered to the floor. Good luck.
