I am installing 3/4″ x 2-1/4″ unfinished red oak in my entry hallway. There was existing tile on plywood which I have removed. The surface of plywood has thinset stuck on it. I knocked it down with a floor scraper and was able to get most of it off the plywood. Is there a problem installing the hardwood floor over plywood with some thinset stuck on it?
I was planning on putting felt down first.
Thanks.

I wouldn't be a problem if the thinset is 1/16" or so thick. Any more you would expect some problems. Felt peper is a deffinatly a good idea. If your worried that it's to thick in spots you may have luck removing it with a heavy abrassive, I would use a disk sander w/ 50 grit. If there's alot to remove, I would just demo the sub floor. Good Luck.
Depends on the definition of "some thinset". If it is left over residue, staining of the plywood, then it wouldn't be a problem. Anything more than 1/8" or so might crack and cause crunching noises. And it certainly has to be smooth.

You might consider renting one of the floor edgers to knock down any uneven parts.
