Learned Friends,
Can I install lapboard cedar siding over my existing lapboard cedar siding? A friend told me I could renail the old siding tight, then install the new siding vertically where the old one is horizontal, and vice-versa. Is this sound?
This is for the sides of a 3-story house where there are only 2 small windows (I assume the windows and trim would have to be adjusted for the extra layer of siding?)
What do you think?

How come you don't keep the existing siding? If you say it has problems, what's to say the new stuff won't also after a while?

Barry,
The existing siding has not been maintained (the house is 18 years old). Quite a few boards show signs of rot or cracks or are pulling out, and the paint is chalking. I don't think there is any defect in the siding itself, just poor maintenance. The identical house next door is OK, and there is no sign of water penetration anywhere.
Since this is a 3-story, 34 foot-high house, repairing, sanding and repainting the whole thing will be very labor-intensive. We were thinking the money could be better invested in new siding which would look much better. Would it make more sense to remove the old siding, or could we keep it as "additional protection" against the heavy rainfall we get here?

JohnPaul-I have always removed bevel siding before reinstalling wood siding. Probably because I don't feel comfortable experimenting on a customer's house. I have gone over vertical wood siding without removing with no problems. I have found the critical variable in cedar or redwood siding (vert. or horiz.) is to backprime the siding before hanging. It's a pain, but I have found it to be essential here in NE Ohio.
Good Luck-John

John,
When you went over vertical wood siding without removing, did you add furring strips to create an air pocket behind the new siding, or did you install it flat against the old stuff? And how did you deal with windows?
Questions, questions... I sure appreciate your answers!
cheers,
JohnPaul.
