i am planing to install 1×6 t&g smooth western red cedar boards on the second floor of my house, i should have done it in the summer but i was always to busy, now the tarpaper is blowing off and winter is approaching fast. my wife wants it installed vertical but i said horizontal would look better and its also easier to install, any pros and cons between the two methods? i have 1 helper and one of my friends is lending me aluminum poles with pumpjacks and alu planks, should i use stainless steel ringshank nails for nailing through the tongue using my hammer or should i use my senco finish nailer that shoot 2″ nails either 15 or 16 gauge. any advice for my project is greatly appreciated

looks are subject to opinion
Vertical you may need to add some nailers, unless they are already there, at 16 or 24 inch intervals horizontally.
nails I would say either way, then after it shrinks up go back and face nail it: :) unless of course it is already pretty dry.
good luck
If he waits until next spring the wood will be drier still.

Which will better compliment the shape of the house? I.e. if the house is already tall and skinny, you don't want vertical. If it's short & fat you don't want horiz. Also consider the rest of the siding, what sort of appearance does it have?
And remember: plaid and stripes don't mix.
