I just installed a 36″ cooktop in my kitchen. I am very dissapointed that the cut out size was so wide. I had to hog out the sides of my cabinet to make it fit. What a pain! My cabinet is a standard size frameless. The inside width is 34.5″ and the cutout had to be 34 and 15/16ths to 35 3/8ths. For

No. My 45" top fit nicely in the 48" base.
yes ran into this problem a few times, when purchasing appliances and sinks the cutout dimensions should be checked as well as the overall dimensions of the product
sure i can fit a double sink into a 30 inch cabinet, but out comes the sawzall and cut the gables out, cooktops are the worst, 30inch cooktop in a 30 inch cabinet? sure, just supply a couple of sawzall blades and pity the poor guy who has to tighten the clamps
caulking is not a piece of trim
Normally a kitchen is planned before it's built, and cabinet and appliance sizing are coordinated.
OK, While we're complaining about designers, who designed your kitchen? That is where your complaint needs to be directed. cut sheets are easily available to check specifics on almost any manufactured product out there today. No excuses.
You know all about nominal sizing. A 2x4 is not 2" x 4", an 8" block is not 8" wide, and an 18 YO girl might be a bit under too.
That said, I have learned that for installing a drop in cooktop , any brand, I need a generous supply of four letter words or patience pills

Excellence is its own reward!
Thermador has nothing to do with it. You installed a 36" cook top in a 36" cabinet.
Had you put a 30" cooktop in a 36" cabinet.... I'd like to think you'd be posting Whoo Hoos that this was sweet and easy.
Or how about next time put a 36" cook top in a 39" cabinet. Or do like everyone else does and cut the cabinet.
Why do they make 24" sink bases and 25" sinks????
Now tell me you install kitchens all the time and have never run into this before? Kitchens are a learning curve and it appears you are on the upside....
Did you rant to the customer about never having to do this before? bet if it gets back to the designer via the customer attention to any missed details are on the way.
This is kithcen 101...good luck.
I surfed quickly away from this website after reading your post, Googled "Thermador," and soon was looking at cutout specs. And we all know that sink base cabs have sides, right. Or do you like doing surgery on them?
Where were you at kitchen planning time? You say it's your kitchen, right?
Everything else fit OK?
Did you read the post made in this same column about the 32 inch fridge going into the too-wide 36-inch hole, looking kinda gappy on the sides?
Real estate is location location location. Kitchens are planning planning planning.
Planing is an understatement....
Kitchens are like brain surgery when it's all said and done you're either a hero or a deadbeat....there is little between.
And the last thing you want to hear from a brain surgeon is ...hmmmm...never seen that before.
I just installed a Thermador 36" 5-burner gas cooktop with a periscope vent in a new kitchen. I checked the spec sheets carefully before ordering the cabinets, and thus ordered a 45" cabinet. I did have a bit of fun trying to get the vent behind the cooktop...had to chisel a groove for the flange on the vent, but it came out ok.
