The DW’s cousin called today and asked if putting insulation in his basement ceiling would keep the first floors floor warmer? The basement is finished with a drop ceiling.
I wonder if it would only help sound transmission throught the floor. The basement has heat in it but it’s electric and to expensive to keep the basement heated all the time. Thanks for the help

that would depend on the rest of the heating and insulation package. What kind of heat supply he has and where it is delivered within the house.
The biggest thing that I imagine would help is at the perimeter /rim joist. That is one place that oftern gets missed in the insulation detailing, and there may be breaks at places where hose bibbs, exhaust vents, oil fill lines, etc are drilled through there, allowing dratts in addition to the heat loss through the sill and band joist itself

It's a walk out basement and there's probably no insulation in the rim joist. That would push cold air right into the drop ceiling. The rest of the house is forced hot air. the units are in the attic.
Would the insulation stop radiant heat loss from above in the rooms. I suggested electric radiant heating but he said it's to expensive. Thanks
Edit: There is insulation in just the rim joist. He said there is a draft also coming from between the sole plate and the subfloor upstairs. I think it may be a poor envelope.

Do the attic units provide heat in the basement too? or was the house first built to be one floor and then the basement finished and shut off from the heat source? If so, the insulation might mnake the cellar colder.
But the rim insulation would defintiely help prevent that draft between floors. Most attic units that i know of are in the south and some are in unconditioned pace, meaning that it is a prime importance to make sure the ducting is insulated and sealed to provide peak efficiency.

It's a two family house and the unit from the first floor has one dust running to the basement. I edited the last post when I got more info.
