I have to insulate from the outside in, ie remove exterior sheathing and insulate. I am going to use housewrap after resheathing. Can I use kraft paper backed insulation and staple it to the stud, or will I run afoul of the vapor barrier thing?

If you do that (with the paper on the outside), slash the paper after installation (assuming you're north of Tennessee or so).
I just finished putting in a bunch of R-19 kraft paper backed FG insulation from the exterior.
I put the kraft paper side against the inside wall/living space. Rather than trying to staple the FG or the kraft paper to the stud, I hold the insulation in place with nylon twine strung back and forth in a z pattern in the stud cavity, held with staples. works like a charm...
