This room is undergoing a conversion from screen porch to enclosed living space. The roof is already in place, and has been for years. At some point, someone installed a ceiling that looks real nice from the inside, but is a little odd. There are four long beams of 4×6 material that literally are just “hung” from the rafters with plumbers metal strapping, and 1×6 T&G is nailed on top of them. I guess call it a floating ceiling (HA). Well, that is going to change, and it’s going to get tied in to the new walls. But there’s no insulation up there, and there were no soffit vents, and the roof is cedar shakes.
The soffits and fascia are shot and in the dumpster for the most part at this point. My concern with insulating is avoiding condensation problems that might wick through the wooden ceiling. A urethane contractor is already coming to do the underside. I’m considering that on top as well, but you know, if I ask him, of course its a great solution. There will be soffit vents installed eventually. I guess I want opinions. I need to seal things up, I need to insulate, I don’t want condensation, and there is enough room there for vents. Products / methods of choice?
