Two bedrooms are over a 4′ crawl space, the rest of our house is over a basement. You can feel the cold air on the carpet in the bedrooms. What’s the best was to insulate the crawl space. I have access to the crawl via the basement. Our house is 50 years old and had vents for the crawl space that I sealed up last year.

I recently insulated a crawlspace by blocking in between floor joists (at the foundation wall) with 2" blue foam (keeping the fiberglass insulation between the blue foam and the rim joist) and sprayfoaming the perimeter of each block (Tremco acoustical sealant works well too). I then put blue foam over the entire inside of the foundation attached with 3 3/4" masonry screws (1/4" in diameter), first drilling holes for the screws. I foamed and used acoustical sealant on all seams. After foaming or otherwise sealing all holes going through the floor, I was finished. It seemed warmer, and I think is going to help on a blower door retest as well. This foundation was uninsulated on the outside. If your foundation is insulated on the outside I would check into this method before doing it so as to make sure it wouldnt trap too much moisture in the foundation.
